HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — A Merrol Hyde Magnet High School senior recalled what she saw in the hallway after a chemical flash fire occurred during a science experiment.Sophia Sisler said she was in the hallway working on an art display Wednesday morning when she heard screaming."A student started coming downstairs into the nurse's office. They were crying and shaking, kind of freaking out a little bit and some of them had soot on them. They were really red, they had red spots on their faces and arms and that sort of thing," she recalled.Sisler would soon learn about the chemical accident that caused a Science teacher and 11 other students to be sent to hospitals. Several suffered second degree burns."A couple had open blisters on their legs already. I think they were all just really panicked from what happened," she said.Sisler said the science department has done the science experiment in the past without any problems. After the accident, she said teachers escorted those exposed to the nurse’s office until emergency crews arrived."They were clinging onto the teachers really and they were crying and they were terrified," she said.She wanted people on social media not to blame the teacher for this accident. It's something that has been done in the past. "He looked them all in the eye while he was actively burning and holding his burn spot and saying 'it’s going to be OK, you’re going to be OK' and he got them all out of the room unbelievably fast and he put all of the students before his own life," Sisler said.The senior said she hopes all the students and teacher fully recover. 1655

Grocery workers continue to be on the front lines during the pandemic.United Way and Kendall-Jackson are now teaming up to get grocery workers more help through a national relief fund they've created.“What we have seen across the county in other disasters natural disasters is that initially there's this outpouring of support and people want to donate, but then it really starts to wane and lag just as the needs are starting to get even bigger,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide.The Grocery Worker's Relief Fund will be available to anyone currently employed by a grocery store.The fund will be giving out 0 per person on a gift card. Anyone who applies will also be connected with the 211 social services helplines in their area to see if they have other needs.United Way says housing insecurity is one of the top issues people are calling 211 about right now.Mental health has also become a much bigger concern among the people who are calling.“While people might call for financial assistance our call specialists who are trained as they start to enter into dialogue, they do discover that there's more there that the person might have anxiety,” said McCormick. “They might be in a domestic violence situation or have very serious mental health issues.”Grocery workers can start applying for the relief fund on October 1 on the United Way website. Get ready for sticker shock at the gas station if you're one of the estimated 36 million Americans hitting the roads this Memorial Day weekend.Gone are the days of -a-gallon gasoline. A spike in crude oil prices has lifted the national average price of gas by 31 percent over the past year to an average of .97 a gallon, according to AAA.Prices at the pump haven't been this high heading into the biggest driving holiday of the year since 2014, when crude was sitting in triple-digit territory."WIthout a doubt people are noticing and they're feeling the pinch," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, a platform that helps drivers find real-time prices.AAA says that fifteen states, including New York, New Jersey and Illinois, are already facing average gas prices or higher. Gas in California and Hawaii, traditionally two of the priciest states, is north of .70 a gallon.Here's why gasoline prices are getting uncomfortably high:People are driving more: The United States is consuming more gasoline, thanks to the strong economy and upbeat consumer confidence.That trend could continue into this weekend. She and her husband never wait to file their taxes because she depends on her refund.But like almost five million other people, they still file paper returns because they are most comfortable doing that."We mailed our paper forms at the end of February," she said.But five months later, Mack still doesn't have her refund."A total of 18 weeks have gone by since we mailed in our return," Mack said.She tried calling the IRS, she says, but like countless other taxpayers, ran into a brick wall."They say they aren't taking calls at the moment," she said.Why refunds are taking so long this yearThe IRS's national taxpayer advocate now says as 4.7 million people who filed paper returns will have very late refunds.That's because the agency furloughed thousands of workers this spring and stopped processing paper returns for two months, creating a huge backlog.Paper processing has restarted, but workers are far behind.Mack needs her tax refund badly."It means a lot to us," she said.
