(KGTV) — Firefighters worked Friday to extinguish a brush fire that sparked in the Otay Ranch area of Chula Vista.Officials said the fire started sometime around 12 p.m. near Heritage Rd. and Olympic Parkway, according to Chula Vista Fire Department. The fire began not far from the Republic Services Otay Landfill.Firefighters said the forward rate of the fire had been stopped at 10 acres just before 2:30 p.m. No structures were lost and no injuries were reported.Neighbors came out to watch firefighters work and monitor the blaze.Some were concerned, thinking of past fires that charred neighborhoods, while others like Jessica Rojas had faith in the firefighters, "we've been hearing like a lot of firetrucks and so we figured they were doing a good job of putting out the fires."In addition to CVPD crews on the ground, SDG&E's Sky Maverick helicopter was called to help battle the flames from above with water drops.Chula Vista Fire Captain Linda D'Orsi said this is a great reminder of the importance of defensible space, saying it's not too late in the year to do that yard work. Through the Parent Intervention Program (PIP), parents learn new strategies while their children develop their social-emotional skills and new ways of expressing themselves. PIP is offered free to Chula Vista families through the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD)."We want to do what we can for our families and children when it comes to the whole child, not only cognitively but socially and emotionally," said Rita Palet, the Director of Early Childhood Education Programs for CVESD.Palet says this is now a priority for the district, which is why they're offering the PIP program to families for free."Behaviors take a while to develop, so they do take a while to diminish," said Palet.Through the program, parents meet others dealing with similar struggles. "When you come here it makes you feel safe, I feel safe coming here, even when we had a rough morning getting here, they're so welcoming," said Mina Fagen, who brings her son to the program.Fagen says her son started acting out after changes happened in the family; his sister went to kindergarten and they also had a new baby in the family."I felt overwhelmed, and still at times feel overwhelmed, but this program gives me a safe place to go to," said Fagen.Parents ultimately give back to the program by volunteering their time later as a "payback parent." This means staff members have completed the program with their own child and can support others going through the program. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

CINCINNATI -- A Blue Ash, Ohio nurse, worried she would be fired for being drunk at work, attempted to steal narcotic medications and flee from Cooper's Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on April 5, according to Hamilton County court documents.The medications stolen by 42-year-old Orlantha Shields included "combinations of morphine, fentanyl, codeine, oxycodone" and others, police said. "As she immediately left the facility, before the end of her shift and without proper medical supervision for the patients, she asked if anyone was going to tell on her and then exited the building," the affidavit for her arrest reads.A pharmacist taking stock of the assisted living facility's emergency supplies noticed the missing medication and Shields' signature in the logbook directly before the theft.Shields was indicted April 25 and charged with theft of dangerous drugs, a fourth-degree felony. 919

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – Chula Vista police are investigating an overnight carjacking and kidnapping involving perpetrators disguised as law enforcement.The incident was reported just before midnight Tuesday in the Rancho Del Rey III neighborhood in East Chula Vista.Police said a group of men, armed with guns and wearing bullet proof vests, were driving in two white Ford Expedition SUV’s, which appeared to look like squad vehicles. Two people wearing vests with the word 'police' on the front ordered him to get out of his Renault Koleos SUV. Police said the victim believed the suspects had a gun. He got into one of their SUVs and was driven to Paseo Del Rey Park, located between Telegraph Canyon Road and East J Street. The suspects released the victim unharmed at the park, according to police.The victim walked 40 minutes to a residence on J Street to call 9-1-1, police said. He was not hurt in the incident, police said.The suspect vehicles and the stolen SUV are still outstanding, according to police.
