AURORA, Colo. — Thousands of people gathered for hours over the weekend, demanding justice in the Elijah McClain case after Colorado's governor appointed a special prosecutor to review the case earlier this week. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, but police used pepper spray on the crowd Friday evening after declaring protesters were unlawfully assembled and after what the police chief called a small group of people throwing sticks and rocks at officers.Around 1 p.m., thousands began gathering at the Aurora Municipal Center for a planned protest organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.About an hour later, the group marched onto Interstate 225. However, police shut the interstate down before protesters arrived. The interstate was closed in both directions from Mississippi Avenue to 6th Avenue as protesters continued to block traffic on the highway before marching onto 6th Avenue. 919

As we shield ourselves in any way possible from the novel coronavirus, there are some parts of the country handling social distancing better than others.“This is a public health problem; it’s not a private health problem,” explained Dr. Bhaskar Chakravorti, who leads the Fletcher Institute for Business at Tufts University. “If I get sick, I could make three other people sick.”Over the past few months, Dr. Chakravorti and his colleagues have been analyzing mobility data from across the country. What did he and his team discover? The top three states who were practicing social distancing the most were New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Nebraska, South Dakota, Arizona were among the worst when it came to practicing social-distancing procedures. Dr. Chakravorti says that has led to higher contagion rates in those areas.“In this post-pandemic moment, each state is going in somewhat a different direction as far as how it's managing the pandemic,” he added. In bigger cities with higher rates of infections, the study found that people responded better to restrictions because they could see the impact the coronavirus was having around them. Dr. Chakravorti hopes public health officials use his findings to make more uniform policies nationwide.“This whole issue of COVID has become a political issue, so even the act of wearing a mask has become a political statement,” he said. “You never want to mix politics with anything. You definitely don’t want to mix it with public health. That’s a dangerous combination.” 1534

ATLANTA — Atlanta's police department said Thursday that it can still police the city even if officers are calling in sick to protest efforts to impose reforms.A department tweet urged people to continue calling 911 if they have an emergency.Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms also insisted that the police department would be able to operate effectively despite the reaction of some officers to her calls for reforms and the charges against two officers in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy's parking lot.On Wednesday evening, hours after Officer Devin Brosnan and former Officer Garrett Rolfe were formally charged in connection with Brooks' death, reports surfaced that a large number of Atlanta police officers were calling in sick in protest. 756

BALTIMORE — It's not just the news of a Free Little Library being vandalized that is turning heads in a Baltimore community. The narration of the crime itself is worth its weight in laughter."I thought it was hilarious when I sped it up and cut it," said Jacqui Cummings. "I said to myself, 'you don't need to fight over it, just make a joke of it.'"The initial vandalism happened on November 7th around 8 p.m. outside Notre Maison Connects. The non-profit focuses on empowering youth while supporting families and strengthening communities.Cummings is the founder of the organization. She said when she first saw the damage, she shed a tear."I did because I do a lot of work myself," she said.Cummings is no stranger to hands-on-work. Not only did she do metal-work to create the Free Little Library, she's experienced in hard labor, helping build day-care centers in other countries."I love giving back and educating," she said.In light of the vandalism Cummings launched a community book drive. So far more than 200 books have been donated."Some are children’s level books and some adult books," said Cummings " There are different books for all levels and I like that variety."This story originally reported by Dave Detling on WMAR2News.com. 1254
