 American Apparel is coming back.Gildan Activewear, the Canadian company that owns the clothing brand, announced on Thursday that it will open a physical American Apparel store in Los Angeles this fall.American Apparel filed for bankruptcy in 2016. This will be the first location to open since May 2017, when Gildan finished liquidating the stores that were still open. Then it relaunched American the brand online in the United States in August 2017.Several retail stores have recently declared bankruptcy as shoppers increasingly move online. Last year, US store closing announcements more than tripled and set a record, according to the retail think tank Fung Global Retail and Technology.Bon-Ton Stores, one of the country's largest department store companies, said in April that it plans to liquidate all 256 of its stores, which include Bon-Ton, Boston Store and Carson's. In March, Toys "R" Us said that it was closing all of its US stores.But American Apparel faced unique challenges. The company, which was known for its racy ads, fired its controversial founder and CEO, Dov Charney, twice in 2014 amid allegations of mismanagement and violations of the company's sexual harassment policies.The 2016 bankruptcy filing noted that "over the last two years, the company lacked a marketing plan and engaged in ad hoc advertising that lacked focus." 2003

With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yet to develop a regulatory framework for CBD-infused products, states are stepping in. This week, Illinois introduced new legislation that could require the testing of CBD products sold in its state. The hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD, is sold as a supplement, promising to manage everything from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain.Rahul Easwar, co-founder of Chicago-based CBD-retailer LeafyQuick, says the product is everywhere.“Gummies, edibles, we’ve got bath bombs, salts, topical lotions," Easwar says. "You name it, there’s CBD in it.”But while some CBD shops like LeafyQuick only sell products that have been tested, there are no laws requiring that. “We don’t obviously accept every brand that knocks on our door, and we go through a very stringent due-diligence process,” says Easwar.And because CBD products are considered supplements rather than drugs, they remain largely unregulated. Since 2015 the Food and Drug Administration has issued more than four dozen warning letters to firms marketing unapproved drugs allegedly containing CBD. Many did not contain the levels of the cannabis derivative they claimed to.It’s that uncertainty about what’s in the products that prompted Illinois state representative Bob Morgan to act. “These are products coming in from other states more often than not are not being tested,” says Morgan. “We don't know if they have heavy metals pesticides contaminants synthetic THC or something way worse.”Morgan is pushing a bill that would require all CBD products sold in the state to pass minimum testing standards. “We should have these high expectations, especially since people were consuming this product,” says Morgan. “These are things people are ingesting and we have to make sure they’re safe.”If they’re not safe, the proposed law would require untested products to be pulled from shelves and online. Sellers violating the law could face stiff fines.It’s something retailers like Rahul Easwar say is essential to the CBD business' long-term success.“Especially retailers, more so the consumers need to demand such regulations and more stringent regulations in my opinion.”For now, there are still no national standards for CBD testing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Communications Office reminded residents Thursday that they have access to nearly 55,000 e-books and audiobooks for free via the county library system.County residents can download digital titles to their tablet or e-reader by downloading the Libby app and linking it with their library account.Residents can also use the library's Overdrive program to download digital titles and collections.E-books and audiobooks can be checked out for seven, 14 or 21 days. At the end of the check-out period, the title will return to the library's collection, eliminating late fees and the possibility of physical damage to the title.According to the county library, digital checkouts in 2018 have increased by roughly 50 percent to more than 1.5 million compared to 2017. The county library system is one of 30 in the world to surpass 1.5 million digital checkouts."The Library encourages reading in every way -- to develop skills, create opportunities and motivate a love of reading,'' said Migell Acosta, the county's library director. "To meet the community's steadily increasing interest in audiobooks and e-books, we have made significant investments into our digital collections, and we look forward to adding many new titles in 2019.''The library's digital collection also includes more than 150 magazines along with its collection of e-books, according to the county. Even though she has no family history and does self exam routines regularly, she's been diagnosed twice with breast cancer."I feel like I have double the opportunity and double the responsibility to make sure I give other women the opportunity to become a survivor," said Breyfogle.A big part of that is help from the Susan G. Komen Foundation. All of the money raised during their Race for the Cure 5K stays in San Diego. This event helps pay for mammograms, biopsies, support resources, and other medical needs for those who need it.Shaina Gross, the President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Foundation San Diego Chapter says, " We hear all the time where people have to pay for their medication or their rent. And we don't want anyone to have to make that decision."Added support, Breyfogle says, is helpful as you deal with a disease that affects six women in San Diego a day.
