(KGTV) — City officials are investigating an incident caught on video between an African American man and a white La Mesa Police officer that led to the officer being placed on leave.The video, posted to Facebook this week, shows the incident that occurred at the Grossmont Trolley Station on Fletcher Parkway. The city said the footage appears to "indicate that a LMPD officer detained an African American male, and in the process, the LMPD officer administered physical contact."The video footage starts after an altercation had already begun between Amaurie Johnson and the police officer. It then shows the escalation and Johnson being placed in handcuffs. Johnson is told that he's being charged with assaulting an officer and led to a police vehicle.RELATED: La Mesa officer in arrest video placed on leave, pending investigation“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson said in an interview with 10News.He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives.Johnson said an officer started questioning him and he gave him the information that he wanted.The nearly six-minute video shows a heated verbal exchange between Johnson and the officer. It also shows the officer forcefully push Johnson into a sitting position onto a nearby bench.Johnson told 10News at no point did he resist or assault anyone."I feel as though people that look like me, um, feel the same way I do and we're tired of it. We're tired of having to deal with stuff like that,” he said.Johnson said he was cited with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.The La Mesa Police Department did not respond to our request for information about the citations. The department also didn’t respond to our request for the officer’s body camera video or release the name of the officer involved in the incident.On Thursday, the La Mesa Police Department issued a statement, saying they are "aware of a video circulating on social media depicting an interaction between a police officer and a citizen at the Grossmont Trolley Station yesterday. We immediately began a review of the incident to find out what happened. The La Mesa Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and asks that any member of the public with information or video regarding this incident contact us at (619) 667-1400."The city says it has started a special investigation into the incident and that the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. 3147

(KGTV) - On Friday, Attorney and Deputy Director of ACLU’s National Immigrants’ Rights Project Lee Gelernt spoke to ABC 10News about how his staff members have not found the parents of 545 children nationwide who were separated by the Trump Administration.“We have found hundreds of others but there remains [to be] hundreds who we have not found,” he said in a Zoom interview.Earlier this week, the ACLU revealed the numbers to San Diego Federal Court Judge Dana Sabraw in a new filing for a case stemming from a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, challenging the president's practice of asylum-seeking family separations, which were put into place after he took over office. “We then had to go door to door on the ground in Central America looking for these parents. [It was a] painstaking, dangerous process. We were making some progress but ultimately the pandemic hit and that slowed things down,” he added.Gelernt said the children are now living with relatives and foster families in the U.S., after they were released from government detention. He added that the ACLU will continue searching for their parents and advocating for their return. “We think that given what these families have gone through, their children ripped away from them, they deserve legal status in the United States,” he said.ABC 10News reached out to ICE for comment, which referred us to DHS. (KGTV) -- Two local families are now connected in a special way, thanks to Lifesharing, the organ donation group serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. Lifesharing arranged a meeting between a North County family and the man who received their son’s heart.Mathieu Bergeron died last May after a tragic skateboarding accident. The 20-year-old was a registered organ donor.Bergeron’s heart saved the life of Dr. Murray Alsip, who was suffering from a heart condition that made it difficult to walk and, at times, to even breathe.Alsip said he had “one foot in the grave” before he was saved by Bergeron’s precious gift.The family meeting was both joyful and emotional. With the aid of a stethoscope, Bergeron’s parents and high school sweetheart got to listen to the heart beating inside of Alsip’s chest.Both families agreed to share their story in an effort to encourage others to say “yes” to organ and tissue donation.Statistics from LifeSharing San Diego: 973

(KGTV/AP) — Protective masks won’t be out of sight when big league baseball resumes. Some players and coaches are planning to wear them on the field. Safety protocols require masks in clubhouses and close proximity indoors, but not on the field. San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has often sported a face mask during practices at Petco Park, among a handful of other players.The Friars have had two players test positive for COVID-19 since summer training camps resumed. Outfielder Tommy Pham has since recovered from the virus and rejoined the team. (KGTV) -- Tuesday, SpaceX launchged several satellites into orbit that will replace a satellite network and monitor climate change. The Iridium-6/GRACE-FO satellites were launched just before 1 p.m. from Vandenberg Air Force Base. For this particular mission, SpaceX launched five Iridium NEXT satellites as part of the company's campaign to replace the world's largest commercial satellite network. A total of eight Iridium NEXT launches are planned with the company that will send into orbit 75 new satellites. Also on board the Falcon 9 rocket will be satellites that will monitor the movement of earth's mass for NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences.Watch the launch in the player below:  775
