(KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County's rising coronavirus case numbers will determine what can stay open and what must shut down again. The uncertainty is taking both a financial and emotional toll for local restaurant owners.Open. Close. Open. Close. This isn't the revolving door that welcomes customers into local restaurants, it's the state's rules on indoor dining that is worrying business owners."It's devastating thinking that we might have to close again," Charlie's Family Restaurant owner, Suzan Meleka said. "I haven't slept in two nights."When the quarantine began in mid-March, the 28-year-old Escondido diner had to shut its doors. Meleka said they tried take-out. But as a traditional sit-down diner, it just wasn't for them.Then came the good news on May 21, 2020. With temperature checks, new cleaning, social distancing protocols in place, Charlie's reopened, and their loyal regulars came back."The food is great, the prices are great, the atmosphere is great!" one customer said."It's like a family here," said another."We were worried that a lot of them might forget about us because we were closed for two and a half months," Meleka said. "So they've just been wonderful. They are glad to be back to some sort of normalcy."But that normalcy did not last too long for diners in 19 California counties on the state's watch list. On July 1, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom declared that every restaurant in counties surrounding San Diego had to again, stop serving food indoors. So far, San Diego is clear from that list. But Meleka is worried we are next."I think if restaurants are following every single protocol, they shouldn't be penalized," Meleka said.Compared to their large dining hall and banquet room for overflow, Charlie's only has four outdoor tables. This may not be enough capacity for the beloved family diner to muscle through another forced shutdown."I keep saying it's the twilight zone because it's just unbelievable," Meleka said.Meleka hopes everyone follows the state's guidelines so that San Diego County can stay off the state's watch list. ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The Golden State Killer arrest is shining the spotlight on a controversial DNA search known as Familial DNA.    In the summer of 2013, communities in southern California were gripped by fear amid a string of unspeakable crimes.An unknown culprit dubbed "The Creeper" entered five homes in Escondido and one in San Marcos, cutting screens, cutting the clothes of little girls and molesting them while they slept.The suspect left DNA at several scenes, but a search turned up no matches. Ultimately, the case went cold until detectives applied to the State Department of Justice for a DNA familial search.In 2015, the mystery DNA profile was linked to somebody already in the system, a close relative of the suspect."They were able to determine through a familial search who the suspect likely was," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders.That suspect was Gilbert Chavarria, who recently pleaded guilty to a host of charges. He was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison."Police did an excellent job gathering the evidence, but the leads were exhausted. Without the familial searches, we'd still be on our hands waiting," said Saunders.Amid concerns from privacy advocates, California Governor Jerry Brown in 2008 enacted a policy that familial DNA would be used only as a last resort.It's been rarely used. but did provide the break in several serial killer cases, including the Los Angeles-area Grim Sleeper case and in the Golden State Killer case. In the latter, the mystery DNA was linked to a familial profile from an ancestry website.Some law enforcement experts say the recent cases could lead to a lot more requests for the DNA search. Familial DNA also provided the break in the infamous BTK serial killer case in Kansas. 1854

(KGTV) - A baby python caught on video being snatched from a reptile store in Escondido has been recovered.Late Wednesday afternoon, police told 10news a break in case led them to a home in Escondido, where a woman spotted in surveillance video admitted to taking the snake and turned it over. The theft took place at LLL Reptile last Friday afternoon."Just shocking because of the way she did it," said District Mangaer Joe Alvarez.Video shows her walking around the reptile shop for about ten minutes, before something catches her eye. On the video, she's seen staring down an employee before she appears to slide open the top of a tank and grab something. Another camera shows her walking right past the checkout counter. From the final camera angle, a yellow snake is seen squirming in her purse."Looks like the snake is making one last ditch effort to get away, you see her literally grab the snake and put it in her purse before she walks out," said Alvarez.That snake is a baby yellow-colored, green tree python, about ten inches long. "A lot of guys pour their heart and soul into caring for these animals, and someone comes and just rips it out. It hurts," said Alvarez.Alvarez was concerned about the snake's welfare, because it requires high heat and humidity. The conditions are more important because of his young age, about three months old. Those worries dissipated when police stopped by the shop on Wednesday, snake in hand. Employees tell 10news the staff was "over the moon excited." Police tell 10news the woman was wanted on 5 outstanding warrants, including at least one drug-related warrant. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One person was sent to the hospital Friday night after an RV fire in Escondido.The fire broke out just before 11 p.m. in an Albertsons parking lot on East Valley Parkway. Two people were inside the RV when the fire broke out. One got out ok, the other suffered burns and was taken to the hospital.  339
