SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County leaders and members of the San Diego Foundation on Thursday announced the start of a new initiative that invests in community-led efforts looking to increase racial equity and generational wealth for Black San Diegans.The Black Community Investment Fund already has more than million attached to it -- funding community leaders are looking to share with organizations within the Black community.Mark Stuart, president and CEO of the San Diego Foundation, said, “Decades and decades the Black community has been held back in San Diego and not of their own doing, it’s by others.”To be considered for a grant, a nonprofit organization must meet one of four pillars.The first being education, as they are looking for projects that address systemic educational challenges in schools. Some of this funding will be used for scholarship opportunities.The second pillar is employment. Grants will be given to projects that support workforce training programs and help pay for paid internships. They want to help drive diversity in different career fields.The third pillar is entrepreneurship, as they’re looking for organizations that will help mentor and financially support new businesses.The last pillar is housing, with the hopes that money will go to organizations that will help members of the Black community buy homes.“Redlining in San Diego happened in 1936. It was outlawed decades later, but families are still feeling those effects of where they live and where they can apply for mortgages and put down their roots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego City Attorney Mara W. Elliott has heard complaints from neighbors and has filed a civil enforcement action to shut down a short-term vacation rental property in La Jolla that has been dubbed a "COVID party mansion."The complaint alleges that defendants are maintaining a public nuisance and engaging in unfair competition, including false advertising at the La Jolla Farms rental property located at 9660 Black Gold Rd. According to city officials, the rental property continues to operate in violation of state and county COVID-19 public health orders.According to a press release, Elliott is seeking civil penalties and a permanent injunction against property owners Mousa Hussain Mushkor and Zahra Ali Kasim, property manager Nital Meshkoor, and Steven S. Barbarich, who leased the property from Mushkor and subleased it as a short-term rental.City officials said the oceanfront mansion has been the subject of at least 30 calls to the San Diego Police Department. Officers have spent more than 173 hours at the property to investigate nuisance activity. Most of the incidents involved raucous parties, some of which had up to 300 attendees.Elliott said about a dozen of the party complaints came during the COVID-19 pandemic, while public health orders prohibited large gatherings.According to the press release, concerns about the property were brought to the City Attorney’s Office by San Diego police and by neighbors who reported that the situation was "becoming more pronounced as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed." “Shutting down dangerous party houses protects the public health by preventing COVID super-spreader events and other illegal behavior,” Elliott said. “It’s unfortunate that San Diego does not have short term rental regulations in place. Relief for this neighborhood would have come much sooner. Instead we must rely on time-intensive prosecutions at significant taxpayer expense.”According to the press release, gunfire was reported to police during a party in May of 2019. Officers arrived and found a large party in progress. Partygoers questioned by police admitted gunshots were fired during a fight that had occurred earlier. Police found shell casings outside the property and a neighbor found an additional casing the next day and turned it over to police. The City Attorney's Office assembled evidence from investigations by SDPD, the Code Enforcement Division of the City’s Development Services Department, the County Health & Human Services Department, and the City Fire Marshal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials Monday echoed Governor Gavin Newsom’s demand to close more businesses as coronavirus intensifies.The state announced Monday that it was closing indoor operations for places of worship, restaurants, wineries, movie theatres and family entertainment, zoos, museums, cardrooms, fitness centers, some offices, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls. All bars were also ordered to close."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. The new order takes effect in San Diego at midnight Wednesday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards and firefighters responded to Blacks Beach on Sunday to rescue an injured paraglider from a ravine.The 27-year-old woman, who is a pilot, was teaching an advanced training course for paragliding when she lost lift and her parachute collapse, according to lifeguards.Witnesses told lifeguards that the woman tried to brace her impact with her legs as she landed into a ravine next to a popular trail called "Citizens Trail."Lifeguards say the woman was far from the trail when she landed and San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to perform a technical rescue to lift her up the trail.The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital, though the extent of her injuries was not clear, lifeguards said. 734
