SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A disheveled man stabbed two strangers within a block of each other Friday in North Park and failed to commandeer the second victim's car, authorities reported.The unidentified assailant -- who looked to be about 30 years old and homeless -- first attacked a 25-year-old pedestrian in the 4200 block of Ohio Street about 8 a.m., stabbing him in the leg and running into a nearby supermarket parking lot, according to San Diego police.A short time later, he tried to steal a 57-year-old man's car near the intersection of Howard Avenue and 30th Street, but when the victim resisted, the assailant stabbed him three or four times in the right arm, then fled on foot to the south, Sgt. Ed Zwibel said.Medics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening wounds, Zwibel said.The suspect was described as a thin, roughly 5-foot-10-inch white man in a gray shirt. 907

SAN DIEGO (AP) — California hospitals are facing increasingly difficult decisions about which services to postpone amid a crushing load of coronavirus patients. Intensive-care beds are full in Southern California and the Central Valley, and hospitals elsewhere are nearing capacity. Gov. Gavin Newsom has yet to threaten the type of shutdown of elective surgeries that occurred in March and April. But some health care professionals and patient advocates are trying to quell any possibility, telling him in a letter it will it lead to bad outcomes for patients. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Marine Corps officials say the pilot of a fuel tanker showed impressive skills when he touched down safely in a remote area of California and prevented injuries among the seven other crew members after a mid-air collision with a fighter jet. A Marine Corps spokesman said Wednesday it's unclear what happened to cause the F-35B to collide with the KC-130J tanker near the town of Thermal in the late afternoon Tuesday. The jet pilot ejected successfully. The jet was refueling when the collision occurred. The tanker came in on its belly in a field."It was an impressive maneuver bringing it down safely by force," 1st Lt. Brett Vannier, a spokesman at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, told the AP. "His skills kind of speak to itself just in the fact that everyone survived.""I think the KC-130 crew did a masterful job of airmanship to get that baby down," added aviation safety consultant and retired Marine Corps Col. San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. SAN DIEGO - San Diego Democrats are now celebrating their party officially taking back the House of Representatives.Now, they want action on a bill they say will take corruption out of U.S. politics."Having the Democrats take back the house is the best birthday present anybody could have," said Ruth Kirk, who lives in Hillcrest. On Thursday, Kirk celebrated with about three dozen of her like minded friends - in front of Democratic Congresswoman Susan Davis's office in North Park. The demonstrators, part of a group called Indivisible, worked to flip house seats from red to blue in the 2018 election. With that goal accomplished, Indivisible is turning its attention to reforming how politics operate in this country. Indivisible held rallies outside Davis's office as well as Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter's Temecula headquarters. They are pushing for H.R. 1 - a bill that would reform campaign finance laws, ethics, and voting rights."We want to get the money and the gerrymandering out of politics and the ethics back into government," Kirk said. Davis says the bill is still being drafted and hopes to have it passed by Jan. 21. That's the eighth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which freed corporations and unions to spend all they want on political ads. It appears, however, to have a minuscule chance in the Republican-controlled senate. Majority leader Mitch McConnell last month called it a blatantly unconstitutional effort to micromanage our elections. Political analyst Ruben Barrales, who worked in the George W. Bush administration, says there are some aspects of the bill that could pass - such as more daylight for campaign contributions. He says Republicans may find some of the bill's provisions too restrictive or granting too much power to one agency.Kirk says she's already thinking about 2020 - and campaigning to put more Democrats in the Senate - and one in the White House. 1947
