A structure that survived El Cajon’s long history is the Knox Hotel, which opened in 1876 to house people drawn to Julian during the Gold Rush. “The people who came here were not poor, they came and they could build lovely houses and buildings like this,” said Eldonna Lay, curator of the Knox House Museum. El Cajon’s main attractions were citrus and chicken farming and a warm climate for people suffering from tuberculosis. Gillespie Field played a big role in World War II. It was then known as “Camp Gillespie.” “All of the planes were being made in San Diego but they were out in what became our airfield,” said Lay. In 1947, the Mother Goose Parade was a gift to children from local businesses. In 1961, Interstate 8 opened and businesses started booming. (KGTV) - A chain reaction crash on SR-125 in East County sent two drivers to the hospital Monday.A 25-year-old woman driving a Hyundai failed to stop in time to avoid hitting a Toyota Camry at the Grossmont Center Dr. exit at 9:10 a.m., CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.The Hyundai rear-ended the Camry, pushing the Camry into oncoming traffic on SR-125.A Chevy Impala driver on the freeway did not have time to react and struck the driver’s side of the Camry, officers said.Officers had to pull the Camry’s driver, a 23-year-old woman, from her vehicle. She was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with moderate to major injuries.The driver of the Impala had moderate injuries.The Hyundai’s driver, a 49-year-old woman, was not hurt.CHP officers do not suspect drugs and alcohol as factors in the crash. 832

(KGTV) - A day after a massive fire broke out in an East County recycling plant, smoke was seen billowing from a building just a freeway exit away Thursday.San Diego firefighters responded to the site at about 12:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen pouring from a building in the 100 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon. The site is that of the city's former police station, that has since sat abandoned.It's not clear if there were active flames inside the building, but footage from Sky10 showed thick smoke coming from the building.San Diego Police officers were also seen nearby with three individuals sitting on the ground. Police have not confirmed if anyone was in custody or being questioned.The site was approved for redevelopment last year, with plans to build a hotel and retail stores on the site.Wednesday, a metal recycling facility burst into flames, sending black smoke into the air.
