SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - San Diego State University unveiled Thursday details about its plan for a stadium in Mission Valley that could serve SDSU and a possible NFL team.The stadium is currently proposed as a home for the Aztecs, with 35,000 seats. It could be expanded into a 55,000 seat stadium for the NFL, according to SDSU athletic director John David Wicker.Details about the stadium include an aluminum-panel exterior designed to resemble boats. The panels would change color throughout the day and be illuminated with LED lighting at night.Other features include more than 82 suites, 50 loge boxes, two end-zone party decks, six exterior balconies, and five different club sections.The site would also offer 90,000 square feet of retail space.The stadium is being designed by global architecture and design firm Populous, which also designed Yankee Stadium, the London Olympics, and the Super Bowl.SoccerCity supporters, who want to bring a Major League Soccer team to Mission Valley, responded with a statement from SoccerCity project manager Nick Stone. 1077

Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

San Diego State University's planned Mission Valley campus will generate more than 45,000 daily vehicle trips once its built out, according to a new draft environmental impact report.In November, San Diego voters approved a plan for SDSU to turn the SDCCU Stadium site into a Mission Valley campus. It will allow the university to grow from its current enrollment of 36,000 to more than 50,000. "It's great, it's allowing more students to come in and get their education started," said Tyler Ollison, who just transferred to SDSU. The university is planning more than just a campus in Mission Valley. It also is proposing a 35,000 seat stadium, 4,600 residential units, 400 hotel rooms, and 95,000 square-feet of retail, restaurants, and a grocery story. Plus, the university plans to build 1.4 million square feet of campus office and lab space, and 100 thousand square feet of medical office space.Its new draft environmental impact report says the project will ultimately generate 45,174 new daily trips to and from the campus, in already bustling Mission Valley. "Our project proposes a number of signal re-timings, and expansions of turn lanes, and a number of entrances and exits throughout the site," said Gina Jacobs, SDSU's vice president for the development. Jacobs added the project calls for a new road from Fenton Parkway into the campus. The draft EIR also studies alternate forms of transportation, including how the on-site trolley stop can figure in. The project completion is expected in 2037. Meanwhile, the new stadium is expected to open in 2022. SDSU is now taking feedback on its draft EIR, which can be viewed here. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob.
