LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Coast Boulevard in La Jolla was shut down Thursday, and will remain temporarily closed, as city crews began emergency construction to stabilize a nearby cave.The city closed Coast Blvd. late Thursday to begin an emergency project to stabilize Cook's Crack after geology experts discovered a zone of weakness in the cave, which is located underneath the street.During a press conference, crews said the concern is an outright collapse of the section of road over the cave. Currently, the weakness "is not a slow settlement" and could fail if erosion happens underneath the street. Much of the dense rock had eroded, and now sand and roots were showing through from underneath.As part of the project, sections of Cave St. and Coast Blvd. will be temporarily closed to traffic for about six weeks. The city said it will make accommodations for nearby residents and business affected by the closure.Officials said the discovery came as the city assessed repairs to Coast Blvd."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, said. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." Heine said crews are allowing pedestrians to continue to walk through the area.The city called in crews from Texas, who drove in overnight to take over the project. Friday, the crews began drilling into the street above to locate some of the weakest points. Eco-friendly polyurethane will be used to shore up those weak points, crews say.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The section of coastline is populated by several small caves that tourists can explore through an entrance in The Cave Store or kayaking nearby.The section of Coast Blvd. over the cave is a popular route to visit the cove and coastline, as well as restaurants that dot the street. 1954

(KGTV) - Some fire victims in Jamul are bracing for a potential power shutoff and more fire danger as the Santa Ana winds move in.A charred landscape marks what was once a picturesque Hidden Haven Farms. Co-owner Ryan Skidmore says his family got the call from SDG&E on Tuesday night, warning of a potential shutoff."Honestly it is was, 'here we go again.' We just got done with this," said Skidmore.Back in September, the Valley Fire decimated the 16-year-old farm known for sustainable farming. The Skidmores lost most of their crops and irrigation lines, along with 125 chickens.The family had tried to get wildfire insurance but was denied, partly because the farm is in a wildfire-prone area. Their total loss was more than 0,000.While several buildings were destroyed, seven others are still standing, including two homes. When the winds pick up, Skidmore will worry."There's flammable material on adjacent properties, and it could always come onto our property and burn what didn’t burn the first time," said Skidmore.Skidmore spent Wednesday hand trimming brush near structures. He'll also be checking his backup power sources, in case the power is shut off. Without power, they can't pump water from their wells."We have three different generators. A big one for the main house and smaller ones for tools and outbuildings," said Skidmore.With their power plans in place, Skidmore says they will settle in and brace for the wind."It's nerve-racking. The wind is so unpredictable," said Skidmore.Since the fires, neighbors have volunteered for cleanups and donated chickens and supplies. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire crews are responding to a three-acre vegetation fire that broke out near the 16100 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Lyons Valley. The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night. The fire is burning in heavy fuels, according to Cal Fire. No structures are threatened. This comes in the midst of strong Santa Ana winds across the county. 379
