BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged the country's political advisors to make more practical proposals to the government to resolve environmental pollution and other social problems. Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultation Conference (CPPCC), made the remark in a letter to the CPPCC's first seminar on China's population, resources and environment development concluded in Beijing on Tuesday. China would have many challenges in achieving steady economic growth and social development next year, which included environmental protection, employment and resources issues, Jia said in the letter. Political advisors should work together and make proposals and suggestions that could serve the people and country effectively, he said. The seminar was attended by members of the CPPCC, China's top political advisory body, and experts from companies and research institutes.

The economic development was the foundation for solving all problems, Li said, noting that as the central government had pointed out, priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth next year. This would be achieved through expanding domestic demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, Li said. All would ultimately target improving people's living standard. DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday stressed confidence, cooperation and responsibility as key to overcoming the current global financial crisis. The global financial crisis is a challenge for the whole world, and the pressing task for the international community is "to take further measures to restore market confidence as soon as possible," Wen told participants attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in the Swiss skiing resort of Davos. In tackling the crisis, confidence is the source of strength, practical cooperation the effective way and accepting responsibilities the prerequisite, he said in his special message at the forum. "We should not only take more forceful and effective steps to tide over the current difficulties, but also push for the establishment of a new world economic order that is just, equitable, sound and stable," Wen said. To this end, international economic cooperation and a sound multilateral trading regime should be promoted, and the reform of the international financial system should be advanced, he said.
