INDIANAPOLIS — In a constant battle to keep your private data secure, Apple is hitting back, keeping people out of your phone. But it’s bringing up a major issue for law enforcement in Indiana. When it comes to solving crimes, often a key piece of evidence is stored on a cellphone or a computer, and police are constantly trying to stay ahead of criminals. But as more people and tech giants are concerned about security, some of those new security features and encryption are stopping police from solving crimes. In 2015, Apple was in the spotlight after they refused to unlock an iPhone for the FBI after a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. At the time, investigators said potential key clues of other possible terrorist attacks could be on the phone. Apple refused to help unlock the device. In the years since, a new device called GrayKey that law enforcement could use to crack iPhones was developed, and they've been using it ever since. "[GrayKey] can plug into iPhones that historically, in general, have what we call 'brute force' on them,” said Steve Beaty, a digital security expert.The September release of Apple's latest operating system, iOS 12, shut down the ability for that special device to work. The result left investigators scrambling. “Apple's fighting these guys pretty hard, has been a bit of a chess game," Beaty said. The Indiana State Police and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department have the ,000 GrayKey device. Both agencies say they only use the device as part of ongoing criminal investigations after a search warrant has been issued by a judge. It started out as a way to help her brother, and now, it's become so much more than that. Now one sister's efforts have made an impact far more than she could ever imagine.In their household, twins Sarah and Jacob Greichen are both included and involved. But one day after school a few years ago, Greichen realized outside the walls of their home, it was a different story."My brother got in and he was crying," Greichen said. "And he was saying, 'Mom I have no friends why don't I have any friends.'"Jacob has autism, and exclusion took its toll."He actually stopped talking completely," Greichen recalled. "He regressed, he went from probably a fourth, fifth, sixth-grade level to first-grade level and it was a really hard time for my family."Greichen decided to do something. And at 13 years old, she founded the non-profit Score A Friend, which builds clubs for students with and without intellectual disabilities in schools and communities."Every single kid meets friends through school or though activities and sports," Greichen said. "And Score A Friend is creating those opportunities for everyone. So that they can meet friends and then those friendships can go from school to home."Clubs can be focused on sports or electives, and one club even got the whole school involved with score a friend week."They talk about inclusion," Greichen said. "What unified sports are what person first language is what do you say when you walk up to a person with a disability and what is the right way to act."Now, Score A Friend has gone national, spreading to more than a dozen schools across the country, including at least two colleges."I mean now we have commercials and billboards out which is crazy!" Greichen exclaimed. "I mean, I never would have guessed this from the beginning."But for Greichen, her brother is the true measure of success."Jacob finally started talking again," Greichen said. "He started playing sports again he started talking to other students and he actually had people to sit with at lunch."Greichen sees Score A Friend becoming a movement. INDIANAPOLIS -- A guidance counselor at Roncalli High School says she was sad and hurt that school administrators and the archdiocese gave her the option to resign or dissolve her marriage after they learned that she was married to a woman. Shelly Fitzgerald says she was asked to meet with school president Joe Hollowell and Principal Chuck Weisenbach last Friday.At that meeting, Fitzgerald says she was shown a copy of her marriage certificate. Hollowell said someone turned it into him and that he then had to turn it into the archbishop."I was hurt, sad, I was hurt," said Fitzgerald. "I've been there 15 years. I've been a part of a community that loves each other. I was stunned. Fitzgerald says she was given four options: to resign, dissolve her marriage or, "stay kind of quiet and hope that it would, you know, stay quiet until the end of the year and keeping my job as long as possible if it stayed out of the media and then they would not renew my contract the following year. Or depending on how boisterous it became, they would have to move towards sooner termination.""I love my wife very much. I didn't have any intention to resign a job that I adore. For me to walk out was like saying I didn't want to be there anymore and that wasn't the case," said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald says she's been quiet for the past 15 years and she wants to be honest with the people in her life that love her. "It really wasn't hiding, I'll tell you that. People knew. People I worked with knew. People I called friends and love, that wasn't secret from the school. There are tons of people that knew and loved me.
