SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s tourism industry is preparing for a hit with restrictions and travel advisories in place ahead of the holidays.Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in March, research shows the San Diego region has lost .6 billion in tourist money.Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California, Oregon, and Washington were issuing a travel advisory, asking people to self-quarantine for 14 days if they’ve traveled out of the state or out of the country.The announcement coincides with the CDC urging Americans to stay home and not travel over the holidays.Local hotel owner Bob Rausch said he believes this won’t just hurt his business, but San Diego’s tourism in general. Rausch said tourism is an important part of the city’s economy.“Even if you don’t work directly in the industry, you likely are getting the benefits of tourism,” said Rausch. “I don’t see any good news for the next six months because it’s not our peak season, there are no corporate travelers coming because of all the restrictions. And there aren’t any groups allowed in the state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew.  "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December. They said that means 15 minutes for an appointment and 45 minutes for walk-ins.  1837
