BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday urged food quality authorities to strengthen supervision in order to to significantly improve food safety, consumer confidence, and the quality and reputation of domestic food.He instructed officials to focus on the prominent issues of food additives, farm products, processing, distribution and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements."Food is essential, and safety should be a top priority. ZHENGZHOU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday visited an ancient Buddhist temple in central China that is believed to be the starting point for Buddhism's spread from India into China.Patil toured the White Horse Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province, accompanied by the temple's abbot Shi Yinle, and inaugurated an Indian-style Buddhist hall as a gift to China.A Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) emperor ordered the construction of the temple in honor of two Indian monks and horses that carried Buddhist scriptures and Buddha statues from India to the then capital Luoyang in 67 AD.During Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in 2005, the two countries agreed to build the Indian-style hall in the temple to commemorate the long history of bilateral ties.The 3,450-sq-m hall was funded by the Indian government and constructed by the Chinese side, the first of its kind outside of India.Wang Zhizhen, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, also attended the inauguration ceremony.Following the visit, Patil left Henan for the ongoing World Expo in Shanghai, the last leg of her week-long state visit to China.During her visit, the two sides agreed to boost cultural exchange and people-to-people contact.

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China initiated a level-four emergency response on Friday to cope with the chaos caused by storms sweeping its southern provinces.Heavy rain has poured down in south China since Wednesday, including provinces of Guangdong, Sichuan and Guizhou, causing floods, mountain torrents and mud flows, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement on its website.As of Friday, the storms had affected up to 2.55 million people and 100,000 hectares of arable land, leaving 65 people dead, 14 missing.  Villagers receive relief materials in Tianxin Village, Egong Town of Dingnan County in east China's Jiangxi Province, May 7, 2010. BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.6 degrees on the Richter scale jolted Yangqu County of Taiyuan city in northern China's Shanxi Province at 8:58 p.m. Saturday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.The epicenter was 38.2 degrees north latitude and 112.7 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 5 km.No instant reports of casualties are available.
