SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described. The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said. They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described. She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders Wednesday approved a plan that would allow San Diego businesses such as gyms and local places of worship to operate outdoors at county parks. The new initiative gives businesses another option as they look to operate amid the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the state implemented restrictions that forced many businesses to either close completely or move outdoors.Under the plan, space at any of the county’s 30 parks could be used for service via a free permit.“We need to be creative and provide a lot of flexibility, particularly to churches, places of worship, gyms, and other fitness-oriented businesses,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who proposed the plan.Jacob said of the process to obtain permits: “I’m asking the county to streamline the process so it’s a very quick turnaround.”She added the process is similar to Poway’s, a city with a similar plan already in place.San Diegan Joel Nevarez visits San Diego’s Waterfront Park off Harbor Drive every morning for his workout because he enjoys it and the park was one of his only options."Getting some sunlight is good for you. I get some fresh air since I work from home, so I like it,” he told ABC 10News.Nevarez’s gym is one of many businesses that shut down amid COVID-19 restrictions. He said if his studio held classes at the park, he'd be one of the first to sign up."It'd be good for anybody and my girlfriend would come, I'd probably tell my friends, too," said Nevarez.Jacob said she hopes the plan will help local businesses get through the pandemic."We're trying to make it as easy as possible for businesses to survive during this difficult time and this is just another way to do it,” she said.RELATED:San Diego City Council approves expanded outdoor operations, 0K relief for small businessesPoway allows fitness classes, religious activities in park space after state closuresVista businesses allowed to take services outdoorsChula Vista highlights businesses moving services outdoors 2013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California’s Republicans are hoping to grow the party’s numbers in the state despite current odds.Roughly a quarter of California’s voters are registered Republican and in San Diego the GOP is seeing people jump ship. The San Diego GOP has lost thousands of voters in the last year with San Diego County Voter Registrar reporting 491,783 Republicans in May of 2018— compared to a little more 500,000 in May 2017.“A lot of that is the bullying or the stereotyping that goes on with being a conservative,” said Justin Clark, a 19-year-old conservative running for state assembly in Los Angeles, “you have a lot of people not wanting to identify as conservative, but a large portion of those 'undeclared to say' voters are.”The number of undeclared voters in San Diego is 476,186 in 2018 compared to approximately 461,000 just a year ago.“Whether your for or against the two-party system is irrelevant,” said Clark, “but its how those people feel. It’s why those decline to state numbers keep going up because they want to stay with them, they want to identify as them.”Among the California GOP’ers convening in San Diego the first weekend in May are other young faces.Morgan Murtaugh is a 25-year-old former news anchor running for Congress in California’s 53rd District, which is currently held by incumbent Democrat Susan Davis.Murtaugh says she’s gotten death threats over her conservative political leanings.“I mean my grandparents immigrated here from Mexico,” said Murtaugh, “I’m Mexican and I’m a woman. People look at me and they’re like ‘how are you identifying as a Republican they hate you?’ They don’t.”Murtaugh says she and other young Republicans are trying to break the stigma they say is a fabrication of the other side.“I want to change that assumption, said Murtaugh, “I want people to see that we can be for equal love, and we can be pro-environment. I really just hope we can get past these labels at some point.”There are 1.6 million registered voters in San Diego with more than 611,000 Democrats. 2043

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista city officials have placed the controversial statue of explorer Christopher Columbus in storage "out of public safety concerns."City spokeswoman Anne Steinberger said the bronze statue was removed early Friday morning from its platform at Discovery Park in the Rancho Del Rey neighborhood. The Columbus statue has been at the park on 700 Buena Vista Way for nearly three decades, but it has been a frequent target of vandals. Last Columbus Day, the statue was doused with red paint. The city had been hearing arguments for and against the removal of the statue with many people -- including local Native American tribes -- calling the sculpture a symbol of hate, theft of land, and genocide. The debate became heated Feb. 26 when representatives from both sides faced off in a Chula Vista Human Relations Commission meeting. The fiery session prompted Chula Vista police to respond. At the meeting, Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone.VIDEO: San Diego man verbally attacked during woman's racist rantThe following night, the committee voted unanimously in favor of a proposal that includes the removal of the statue. The approved a resolution has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic."Due to restrictions related to coronavirus, there has not been an opportunity to hold a public forum for community dialogue," said Steinberger. "It is expected that the item will be brought forward for further public input and consideration."It's unclear how long the statue will remain in storage or if the city has decided it will remain there permanently. In a statement regarding its removal, City Councilman Steve Padilla said, "Many have asked for its removal, and given all that is happening nationwide regarding America’s legacy of racism, the City decided to put it in storage.""I look forward to an important community conversation about the final fate of the statue, as well as further actions the City can take to ensure that ALL Chula Vistans feel safe and welcome in our community," said Padilla. The city's decision to stow the statue comes amid national-turned-global Black Lives Matter protests against racism and police brutality stemming from the in-custody death of a black man, George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck as he begged for air.READ: 8 Books To Teach Kids About Racism And Social JusticeIn response to call for racial justice, various cities and institutions have taken steps to eradicate symbols honoring controversial figures including public statues of Confederate soldiers. This last week, Nascar and the U.S. Marine Corps announced a ban on public displays of the Confederate battle flag.Demand for action has even extended to Disney. A petition posted on Change.org asks that company remove all references to its 1946 film "Song of the South" from the water ride Splash Mountain. 2994
