LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the three Louisville police officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor is being fired.The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, announced Friday that the police department is initiating termination procedures against officer Brett Hankison, 44.“Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the Chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment, or even the timing of this decision,” the mayor said in a statement.According to a termination letter obtained by WLKY, Hankison was informed of his firing Friday morning.The other two officers involved in the fatal shooting, 47-year-old Jon Mattingly and 42-year-old Myles Cosgrove, remain with the department, but have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports.As part of a narcotics investigation, the officers used a battering ram to knock down Breonna Taylor’s door as they served a no-knock warrant in the early morning hours of March 13.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot. The officers returned fire, shooting Taylor eight times, and she died in the hall of her apartment. No drugs were found.Thursday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron held a press conference, where he asked for patience from the public as his office investigates the shooting.Taylor's death is one of a handful of African Americans who have died at the hands of police officers or former police officers in 2020. Altogether, there’s nine of them in our neighborhood,” said Jennifer Quadrozzi, who lives in Massachusetts. “They were super excited. It sounded like a vacation to them. They had two weeks off, but that turned into the rest of the school year.”Quadrozzi and her 7-year-old daughter spent the end of the school year and all summer socially distancing with a group of parents and kids in their community.“We call ourselves ‘The Bubble,’” said Quadrozzi.To keep her daughter protected in their bubble, she has become one of the many parents around the country considering micro-schooling for the upcoming school year.“Right now, there are three families that are considering it. That age range would be from first grade to third grade, and we would follow the curriculum that was developed by our community, our schools,” added Quadrozzi.With micro-schooling, a few families join together to create a homeschooling pod. Quadrozzi is planning on converting her daughter’s playroom into the classroom. They’re leaning towards paying an educational facilitator to teach the children during the week.“That could be anyone from a retired teacher, to a teacher’s aide, to anyone who got laid off,” said Quadrozzi.One of the concerns around micro-schooling pods is that there are many parents who can’t afford to pay someone else to teach their kids. However, there are some parents finding a way to make micro-schooling pods more affordable.“I am a stay-at-home mom and I realize I am very fortunate to be able to do that, but the other parents in our pod are working parents,” said Gentel Larochelle.Larochelle’s pod has each parent teaching their group of five kids, one day of the week.Not only is their micro-schooling pod model more cost-effective, but it frees up time for some parents who have to work.“If this is something that parents want to do, the options are there for them it just takes a little creativity and a little bit of sacrifice,” Larochelle added.Pods can be formed, organically, with your friends and family, or there are Facebook groups now forming in almost every state around the country where parents are making connections.These two Massachusetts moms have learned the key to creating a pod is starting your search early. You’ll need time to talk with other parents that may be in your group about mostly creating a set of rule or pact for your pod, especially around social distancing outside the created classroom. MIAMI — All of South Florida is now in the cone of concern for Hurricane Eta, which hammered Nicaragua on Tuesday.According to the 4 a.m. ET update from the National Hurricane Center, Eta is packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.The NHC said Eta will rapidly weaken as the storm moves farther inland over Nicaragua and Honduras.The forecasts project the storm will curve and emerge over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Thursday night or Friday. Once it does, forecasters said it could re-strengthen into a tropical storm.By Sunday at 7 p.m., the center of Eta will be just south of Florida with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.According to meteorologists for Scripps station WPTV in Palm Beach, Florida project that there will be a higher confidence on Friday for the potential impacts in South Florida."Computer models are in fairly good agreement, but the timing is different," said WPTV chief meteorologist Steve Weagle said.
