SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A Pacific Beach man says his community is in need of a cleanup. He's raised hundreds of dollars to get it done.According to resident Adam Huntington, overgrown grass, untamed trees, and grimy sidewalks are just some of the mucky issues surrounding Pacific Beach.Huntington has been living in Pacific Beach for at least two decades."You've got beautiful architecture, beautiful masonry, that's just getting covered by grime and dirt."Huntington shared a video with 10News of a cruddy sidewalk on Garnet Avenue, one of Pacific Beach's main streets."We're in the middle of a pandemic right now," says Huntington. "We have an extremely unhealthy, unclean environment, and we force all of our restaurants to go outside and serve people."He hired a private company to power wash another area of Garnet Avenue over the weekend. The funds were raised by a GoFund Me Page. The cost of cleaning was ,200."We have people all over this community, wondering where our services are."We asked the city about why it's not using its services to clean up the area. A spokesperson said they don't have a statement at this time but encouraged anyone with a concern about cleanliness to report it on the city's "Get It Done" app.The city also tells 10News residents do not need a permit to clean or power wash a sidewalk on their own, but they must have a plan to prevent runoff from going into the storm drain. Huntington says he went with an eco-friendly company that followed those guidelines.The former lifeguard says to keep the beach area looking nice, he replaced the wooden barrier posts along the road that surrounds Crown Point."The reason people come to San Diego is to enjoy Mission Beach and Pacific Beach."With the help of two local hardware stores, Huntington says he was able to acquire power tools to continue to help spruce up the neighborhood.As for the overgrown brush, the city says its weed abatement program is back online since being paused due to COVID-19. 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, the White House announced that it has pardoned Margaret Hunter one day after granting a pardon to former Congressman Duncan Hunter over misuse of campaign funds.Margaret Hunter was sentenced to eight months of home confinement and three years probation after she pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With just three weeks to go, the Veterans Village of San Diego says they're about 0,000 short on cash donations for this year's "Stand Down" event.Stand Down, now in its 32nd year, is a weekend-long event that helps homeless veterans connect to all the services they need to get off the streets.Program Director Darcy Pavich says people and companies across San Diego typically donate about 0,000 worth of in-kind donations and 0,000 in cash each year. While the in-kind contributions are on track, the cash is short. Pavich says that means they won't be able to buy a lot of the items that can't be donated."What we won't have is things like the tables and chairs, cots to sleep on, some the structure that we build that we have to purchase," she says.Around 800 homeless veterans go to the Stand Down event each year. Marine Corps Veteran Ritesh Kumar Patel says it was the difference between him living on the streets and getting his life back together."It was mind-blowing," he says of the amount of help he got. "I was on the verge of dying, and I didn't realize it, and I didn't know, and I didn't know there was help out there."Patel has been living at the Veterans Village for three years now. He's recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and PTSD. He's also studying for a bachelor's degree in business.He says Stand Down made it all possible."I've seen the benefits that you can get by just being willing to listen," says Patel. "My life has changed."Pavich says she believes donations are down because the event has been moved to earlier in the year. Traditionally, it has been held on the same weekend as Comic-Con in late July. Last year, the VVSD moved it to late June. Pavich thinks people who wait until the last minute to send donations don't know about the earlier date."Stand Down is the in-road to saving lives," she says. "When we can offer someone their life back, you can't put a dollar value on that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats.
