(KGTV) — The grandmother of the 17-year-old who's accused of stabbing Lisa Thorborg to death on a Carlsbad hiking trail in November doesn't believe her grandson could have committed the crime.Christie Hernandez said that she talked to her grandson, Haloa Beaudet, just after Tuesday's virtual court hearing where new surveillance images were revealed and the judge allowed the release of the teen's name. Images of his face have been ordered to remain withheld from the public."[He said] 'I'm strong. I'm going to be positive. You and papa [don't need to] worry. Detectives said that his DNA was found on the victim's shorts and a pair of his sandals were found near her body. His attorneys argue that he is a free spirit who often left his sandals behind and Thorborg may have picked them up, which is how his DNA got on her."He would not have done this. She described him as a kind young man who is incapable of violence. CARLSBAD (CNS) - A Carlsbad man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly killing his roommate.Patrol officers responding to a report of a death in the 2500 block of West Ranch Street at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday found a 40-year-old woman dead in an apartment in the neighborhood near the intersection of El Camino Real and Tamarack Avenue, police said.Her name was withheld pending family notification.Detectives questioned the woman's roommate, 44-year-old Brehon Roy Quigley, then arrested him, Carlsbad police Lt. Jason Jackowski said. Quigley was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of murder.Police declined to release details on how the victim died and would not disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying."The investigation into what occurred and why is ongoing," the lieutenant said. (KGTV) - A new law, passed unanimously by the Carlsbad City Council, will allow any place with a license to serve food and alcohol to also host live entertainment.Previously, only places that served primarily food were allowed to have live music or shows."What we’re looking at is more of the solo artist, the pianist, more of the acoustic music that we’re seeing a trend in the rise all over," says City Village Manager Claudia Huerta.The city hadn't updated its live entertainment rules since 2017. Huerta says business owners had requested the change to keep pace with other similar coastal cities. Now, they can apply for a permit to have live entertainment, including music, DJs or other performers like hypnotists and comedians."The village is a special place," says Zac Markham, who owns Humble Olive Oils on State Street. "I really think this will raise bar of the village and make it a place to be for Carlsbad and all of our county."Not everyone is excited about the change. Some neighbors worry that more music will lead to more people and more problems, especially late at night."The whole purpose of that is to get more business, right? I understand, that’s a valid business reason," says Carlsbad Barrio resident Simon Angel. "But is it appropriate for the communities that are going to be impacted by it? We already have people walking through at night. Sometimes they stop and relieve themselves or they get sick in people's front yards."Huerta says the city is working to make sure that doesn't happen. Every application for an entertainment permit will be reviewed by the police. And the City Council will revisit the program after 6 months to make sure it hasn't created any problems.The new ordinance goes into effect in April. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of Marines recovering from injuries are at Camp Pendleton this week for the Warrior Games Trials. They're competing to represent the Marines at the National Games, but also finding new ways to heal from their injuries."It helps you know you're not alone," says Lance Corporal Jay Alan Davis, who was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder while on duty.This is LC Davis' first time at the games. He says it's been uplifting to find a sense of camaraderie among the athletes."If you're able to sit there and talk to somebody about it, they're more likely to go to you," he says. "Then you don't have to feel alone. You don't have to be alone."That's the same sentiment that brought Tisha Knickerbocker to the games in 2012. Tisha was a life-long athlete until she broke her back. Finding a way to compete still has helped her mental recovery."It improved everything," she says. "It was great. I really can't find a word that accurately describes the feeling that it gave me to get an old part of myself back."The games run from March 4-12 at Camp Pendleton. Many of the athletes will advance to the National Department of Defense Warrior Games in September in San Antonio. 1222
