SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials.The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego announced Monday a three-year pilot project to test the use of concrete tide pools as a shoreline stabilizing tool. The concrete company ECOncrete will analyze the efficacy of its concrete tide pools as a possible replacement for traditional shoreline-stabilizing tools like rock armoring. The concrete tide pools will also serve as ecosystems for aquatic animals and organisms that live in natural tide pools. The tide pools interlock like puzzle pieces and are made of low carbon concrete that, according to the company, is environmentally safe and tailored to the environment in which its placed. ECOncrete plans to install 72 of the concrete tide pools across three areas of Harbor Island's shoreline, according to the Port of San Diego. ``ECOncrete's Coastal Star tide pools have great potential to provide many benefits for San Diego Bay,'' said Port of San Diego Board Chair Garry Bonelli. ``The Port looks forward to seeing if they can provide shoreline stabilization, help guard against coastal flooding, and improve the ecology of our bay water.'' The project is the eighth approved in the Port of San Diego's Blue Economy Incubator, which is intended to streamline the process in which businesses can launch pilot projects for so-called blue technology. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The caregiver for a 74-year-old man who died in her care and another senior who were both involuntarily locked away at her various San Diego residences was sentenced Friday to 13 years in state prison.Shirley Montano, 53, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of voluntary manslaughter, false imprisonment of a dependent adult and perjury.A murder charge stemming from the death of Robert Chagas was dropped under the plea agreement.RELATED: Woman to stand trial for senior's death, abuse of elderly womanProsecutors alleged the defendant withheld food from Chagas and Josefina Kellogg, 61, causing their health to deteriorate over the course of several years, during which she moved often and relocated them, as well.Chagas died Oct. 7, 2016, at Sharp Memorial Hospital of pneumonia, which prosecutors argued was exacerbated by severe malnutrition he suffered under Montano's care.While the victims lived with Montano, she used their social security checks and other government benefits to buy herself a truck, among other personal purchases, and gambled away their money at local casinos, according to prosecutors.Testimony from Montano's 2019 preliminary hearing indicated Chagas and Kellogg were kept isolated from others and were confined to their respective bedrooms. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. As more private labs are administering tests, there is a possibility that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services.For privacy reasons, SDSU does not report names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19 unless a public health agency advises that there is a health and public safety benefit to reporting such details.The university will also not disclose the specific location of the individual who was infected for privacy reasons and also because avoiding the physical location does not inherently lower a person's risk of infection. 1353
