SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is making holiday giving even easier, teaming up with Express Feedback for Good to raise money for their Toys for Joy campaign.Under the new program, people can sign up to take on-line surveys. For each one they take, the Church will get towards their holiday fundraiser."This is a life or death situation for some kids and some families," says Pastor Miles McPherson.The Toys for Joy program is now in its 23rd year. Each year the Church helps around 20,000 families with food, clothing, toys, and more for the holidays. McPherson says he hopes the new survey tool will inspire people to do more."The express feedback tool gives people the opportunity to do something to help somebody, but we want them to take the next step, touch a person, smile at a person, hear someone's story," he says.The surveys only take about one minute each, and there's a limit of 100 per person. The Church says they hope to raise 0,000 from the surveys, to help supplement the other donations they get each year.The company, Express Feedback for Good, takes the information from the survey and sells it to businesses to help them serve their customers better."It's a win/win for both parties," says Product Manager Dena Coykendall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo welcomed a rare bear cub to the mix last week.Zoo officials say an Andean bear cub was born to mom Alba and dad (or, sire) Turbo on Jan. 8 in the early morning hours. “We are overjoyed about the birth of Alba’s first cub,” said Chris Hamlin, animal care manager at San Diego Zoo. “Alba is showing all the appropriate behaviors of a good mother, being very attentive to her newborn. Giving the bears their space is critically important, as Andean bear cubs have an extremely high mortality rate in their first month, so care takers are being watchful but cautiously optimistic. The bear's sex is yet to be determined.But the interactions and long-term survival of the cub could led to a bounty of information for researchers.RELATED: San Diego Zoo Safari Park rhino's broken toe on the mend with new cast“The Andean forests where we work are so rugged and dense that it will be a long time before we can study the maternal behavior of wild bears there,” said Russ Van Horn, population sustainability scientist at San Diego Zoo Global. “Alba's behavior and her cub's development will suggest how closely, and for how long, wild mothers and cubs may be linked to birth dens, where we think they’re sensitive to disturbance by humans.”Andean bears are only found at a few zoos in the U.S. Also called "spectacled bears," the bears are marked with unique rings and fur around their eyes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council will look into creating "Bus-Only" lanes along a 2.7 mile stretch of El Cajon Boulevard.The lanes would go from Park Avenue to Fairmount Street, an area commonly known as "The Boulevard." MTS Route 1 and the 215 Rapid Route are the most frequent buses along that stretch. Route 1 runs along El Cajon Boulevard from La Mesa to Fashion Valley. The Rapid 215, which launched in 2014, goes from Downtown to San Diego State University, offering fewer stops than traditional bus lines."When it was originally designed, it did have these exclusive lanes," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "That's really what makes Bus Rapid Transit work, is when you can zip by all the cars."Combined, the 215 and 1 carry more than 10,000 passengers per day along El Cajon Boulevard. That makes it the second busiest stretch of road in the MTS system.Schupp says dedicated bus lanes would take up to 5 minutes off the trip, which could lead to more passengers."We're hoping this pilot will show us that a dedicated lane along a long stretch of road can build ridership and get people out of cars," he says. "The buses come faster, you get another 5 minutes from the dedicated lanes, and now your trip is competitive with a car."A recent study by the city's Transportation Engineering Operations office details three options for a bus-only lane. One option would separate the right lanes of traffic from the other lanes with a solid white line and markings that say "Bus Only." Another option would paint the entire right lane red and designate it for buses. A third option would make "pass by zones" in the most congested parts of the street, painting them red and allowing buses to bypass cars at intersections.Business leaders along "The Boulevard" say adding bus-only lanes would make the area safer, providing a buffer between the sidewalk and traffic. They also feel the change would lead to more people spending more time in the area."There's definitely a sentiment of wanting to make El Cajon Blvd a safer business district," says Beryl Foreman from the Boulevard Business Improvement Association.Foreman also says it will help with parking problems in North Park and City Heights, as better bus service will lead to fewer people driving in the area.City Council President Georgette Gomez and Council Member Chris Ward both sent a letter supporting the idea. The full Council will have to approve the project if they decide on the entire red lane option. That's unlikely since the Federal Highway Administration prohibits red Lanes without a special experimental exemption. The other two options do not need City Council approval. 2671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Department of Agriculture is warning residents not to open unsolicited packets of seeds some people reported receiving from China.The department says it has taken 58 calls from people reporting receiving the seeds as of Wednesday afternoon and warns anyone who receives a package to not plant the seeds or throw them away. “The main concern with these seeds is that they were mislabeled and went through customs without an inspection. Seed from other countries might have pests or diseases that don’t exist here. The County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures is constantly looking for invasive pests which can be weeds, insects, or diseases. They can cause a lot of harm and we work hard to eliminate them.”RELATED: Mysterious seeds sent from China to US mailboxesThe department says unopened seed packets should be dropped off at drop boxes at 151 E. She said she didn't think anything of it when it arrived at her Imperial Beach home a few weeks ago."I said 'I don’t remember ordering and I thought maybe I did, or maybe it was a free gift or something,'" she said.She put the package aside until recently, when posts and warnings about the seeds started circulating. She said she's happy she didn't throw it away or plant them, but is nervous that her name, address and phone number were all on the package.Reports of unidentified seeds from China have been popping up across the country. All 50 states have now issued warnings about the packages. The department believes it is all part of a “brushing” scam used to boost ratings for online vendors. The packaging label ranges from jewelry to "handmade flowers," and the seeds on the inside vary in size and shape.“At this time, we don’t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a ‘brushing scam,’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales. USDA is currently collecting seed packages from recipients and will test their contents and determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to U.S. agriculture or the environment,” the USDA said.Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the address labels were forged and that China Post has asked USPS to send those packages to China for investigation. 2618
