The toy run in December is usually one of the big ways Children's Hospital Colorado gets donated toys. But because of COVID-19, the supply of toys is down considerably. So the hospital reached out to some riders, and Sunday, they got a special delivery to help replenish that supply.Kids at Children's Hospital know when they hear those Harley engines roar, toys are on the way."Any motorcycles coming up to the hospital, the kids plaster themselves the windows. They love to see the bikes riding up," volunteer Bob Cuculich said."That's why we do it. It's things like this that make it all worthwhile," organizer Eddie Dane said.But it's not December when this toy run usually happens."Because of COVID this year, the hospital reached out to Rocky Mountain Harley Davidson, because we're a sponsor to the toy run and have been for years," Dane said.Dozens of bikers answered the last minute call to help."They're not reusing toys. So we are are going to replenish their supply and do the best we can to get them some more toys to last them until December," Dane said.They didn't know how many bikers would show. They just knew they needed to try to help the kids."There's a huge need," Cuculich said.But the roars were there, filling up the bins, and they hope more toys can be brought. Just no stuffed animals right now."Plush toys right now, they are just too hard to keep clean, and infection control just makes it a challenge to be able to give those to the kids," Cuculich added.The bikers hope this special delivery makes the kids happy and lasts until the main ride in December. The White House has once again lowered the American flag to half-staff, after the flag was left at its full height for most of the day on Monday.In a statement released at about 4 p.m. ET, President Trump ordered flags be flown at half-staff until Sunday, the day of McCain's internment at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Trump administration faced criticism from politicians across party lines for choosing to fly the flag at full-staff while the rest of the federal government continued to honor Senator John McCain by keeping the flag low. Ohio Gov. John Kasich called the decision to keep the flags flying high "shameful."While protocol calls for the flag to be flown at half-staff the day and the day after a member of Congress dies, recent tradition has kept the flag at half-staff until sunset on the day of member's interment.   868

The Russian government denied Monday that it had interfered in the 2016 US election campaign in the Kremlin's first remarks since 13 Russian nationals were indicted Friday on charges of conspiring to defraud the US.Answering a question from CNN on a weekly telephone news conference, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, said the indictments provided "no substantial evidence" of Russian meddling, and that there were "no indications that the Russian state could have been involved.""We didn't see any substantial evidence of someone interfering in the domestic affairs," Peskov added. The U.S. Navy is investigating an incident that happened at the National Navy SEAL Museum last year which involved dogs attacking a target who was wearing a Colin Kaepernick jersey.Although the incident took place last year, video of the event began circulating on social media over the weekend.CNN reported that the museum is privately owned and not sponsored by the Navy.“We became aware today of a video of a Navy SEAL Museum event posted last year with a military working dog demonstration,” the tweet reads. 521

The Senate is set to move forward with its version of the annual defense policy bill known as the National Defense Authorization Act -- marking the latest step for a key piece of legislation that has been passed by Congress for 55 straight years.At a time where passing bills is often challenged by the deep partisan divide and competing political factions on Capitol Hill, it can be difficult to understand why the NDAA would be any different.But as the measure that sets military policy on issues such as Guantanamo Bay, buying weapons, pay raises for service members and even the endangered status of the Sage Grouse, the NDAA is considered of one the few must-pass bills left in Congress.So what makes it so important?One of the most obvious reasons is the money.The NDAA authorizes levels of defense spending -- an amount between that will total between 0 and 0 billion for the next fiscal year that begins on October 1 -- and sets the Pentagon policies under which that money will be spent.This year's bill is expected to authorize a major hike in military spending and even exceed the billion defense budget increase requested by President Donald Trump for 2018 that aimed for more aircraft and ships.In July, the House of Representatives passed their 6 billion version of the bill which included billion more in defense spending than the Trump administration requested.The Senate's bill is expected to authorize a similar amount based on the mark up completed by the armed services committee, led by Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, in June.If the Senate's bill passes as expected then both houses of Congress will come together to vote on a final version. A vote in the Senate is scheduled Monday.But the fight over the size of the defense budget is just getting started, however, as Senate Democrats have vowed to block major increases to defense spending without equal increases to domestic programs.That fight will occur later this year over the defense appropriations bill, which is a separate piece of legislation that allocates spending for the Pentagon.In addition to authorizing increased military spending, the NDAA will set Pentagon policy on several key issues including troop level increases for the service branches and render a decision on a controversial new "Space Corps" program that was included in the House version of the bill but left out by the Senate.The program was also opposed by the White House and the Air Force.There will also be several controversial issues that will likely be left out of the NDAA including an amendment that would block Trump's ban on transgender service members and the proposed repeal of the 2001 and 2002 war authorizations that the US military uses to fight terrorism across the globe. 2776
