(KGTV) - A furnace door was not closed while the system was being operated at a San Diego County, California crematorium Thursday, sending heavy smoke containing the ashes of human remains above the area.The problem was reported at 12:15 p.m. at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St in National City, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.National City Fire Captain Brian Krebs said the furnace was in use and the oven door was not shut, sending smoke out of the chimney and the open doors of the building.The building’s heat detectors activated the fire extinguishers, according to a funeral home employee. Firefighters said the extinguishers gave off a strong odor. There were human remains in the smoke, Krebs confirmed. Millions of small businesses that received Paycheck Protection Program loans have been waiting for answers on how and when their loans would be forgiven. Now, the Small Business Administration has announced a plan that would forgive almost 70% of all the loans it gave out.“The new guidance that has come out from treasury department and the SBA aim to ease the process for applying for forgiveness of loans under ,000,” said Molly Day with the National Small Business Association.The new guidance forgives PPP loans that were ,000 or less, but also comes with a new rule. The rule allows businesses with no employees or businesses where the owner is the only employee, can now have most or all of their loan forgiven.Initially, most of the forgivable portion of a PPP loan was that which was used toward paying employees. The new rule also relaxes the scrutiny requirements on lenders to review documentation from small businesses proving how the money was spent.“A lot of small businesses don’t have employees, or they have one employee and that is themselves, adjusting that really makes it a lot more workable for the sole proprietors that are small businesses [and] are doing great work and deserve some assistance as well,” said Day.The forgiveness process laid out by the Small Business Administration does not have the usual red tape that comes with most government forgiveness processes. Business owners who received loans of ,000 or less have to fill out a one-page document, just released by the SBA, and have their lender process it.“I do think making the forgiveness process easier and more streamlined could help many small businesses,” added Day.With the loan debt hanging over their heads, many small businesses have been reluctant to take on additional debt or put more of their saving into their businesses. More than 900 people in 48 states have been sickened with salmonella, and at least one person has died, likely caused by backyard poultry like chickens and ducks.While outbreaks of salmonella from backyard poultry is not uncommon, the number of cases this year is higher than normal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They report 15 multi-state outbreak strains currently being investigated.Since June 24, 473 more people have gotten sick according to CDC’s data, for a total of 938 people infected with salmonella so far this year. Roughly 33 percent of those who got sick had to be hospitalized. The one reported death was in Oklahoma.At the end of July 2019, 768 people in this country had gotten sick from salmonella linked to live poultry.The CDC was able to interview about 400 patients this year, and of those, 74 percent reported having contact with chicks or ducklings. Testing from backyard poultry environments in Kentucky and Oregon identified three of the outbreak strains.The CDC recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water whenever a backyard poultry animal is touched or handled, or their eggs or habitat is touched.
