The second night of the Republican National Convention was one that featured three Trumps not named Donald, and also had its share of controversy. Before Tuesday’s festivities commenced, the Republican Party booted Mary Ann Mendoza from its slate of speakers following an anti-Semitic remark on Twitter. The evening also included an address from current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who became the first active secretary of state in recent times to speak at a major political convention, prompting questions from Democrats whether the speech was a violation of government ethic rules.President’s family takes center stage at RNCTwo of President Donald Trump children, along with his wife Melania, were featured during Tuesday’s portion of the convention. Their speeches followed one given by Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. on Monday. While generally the family of candidates avoid partisan attacks, Eric Trump went after after Joe Biden and the Democrats.“He is a career politician who has never signed the front of a check and does not know the slightest thing about the American worker or the American business,” Eric Trump said.Tiffany Trump, who graduated from law school earlier this year, related to those struggling to find work amid the coronavirus pandemic."Like so many students across the world, I graduated from law school during the pandemic,” Tiffany Trump said. “As a recent graduate, I can relate to so many of you who might be looking for a job. My father built a thriving economy once, and believe me... he will do it again."The evening concluded with remarks from First Lady Melania Trump, who spoke from the newly-remodeled White House Rose Garden.Melania Trump also acknowledged the impact the coronavirus has had on the US, which has claimed nearly 180,000 American lives, and the jobs of millions of Americans.“I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed drastically,” the first lady said. “The invisible enemy, COVID-19, swept across our beautiful country. And impacted all of us. My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one and my prayers are with those who are ill or suffering. I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless. I want you to know you are not alone."Unlike her stepson Eric, Melania said she would not attack Joe Biden.“I don't want to use this precious time attacking the other side, because, as we saw last week, that kind of talk only serves to divide the country further,” she said.Trump hosts citizenship ceremony at the White HouseIn an unusual sight that mixed politics and official business, the president hosted a citizenship ceremony for five permanent residents turned citizens.“Today America rejoices as we welcome five absolutely incredible new members into our great American family. You are now fellow citizens of the greatest nation on the face of God’s earth. Congratulations," Trump told the new US citizens. To Trump, the moment reflected an opportunity to promote legal immigration over those who come to the US illegally.“You followed the rules, you obeyed the laws, you learned your history, embraced our values, and proved yourselves to be men and women of the highest integrity,” Trump said. “It’s not so easy. You went through a lot, and we appreciate you being here with us today.”Anti-abortion speaker in Twitter spat during RNCAbby Johnson, a former employee of Planned Parenthood who spoke out against the organization, was in the midst of a Twitter war moments before she spoke during the RNC.Johnson said that she stood by comments she previously made that voting should only be open to the head of the household. In May, Johnson tweeted, "Then they would have to decide on one vote. In a Godly household, the husband would get the final say."“Yes. So shocking! A husband and wife who are in agreement and a wife who honors her husband as the head of the home. Gasp!! What a weird, biblical concept,” Johnson tweeted on Tuesday in response to the May tweets.Johnson later added, “I would never try to prevent women from voting.” 4062
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded a warning about several hand sanitizer products that have been found to contain wood alcohol, which can potentially be deadly to ingest or absorb through the skin. The agency says there has been a sharp increase in products that claim to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but have tested positive for methanol, or wood alcohol.Methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening, according to the FDA.Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death, the FDA says."Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects," the FDA wrote in their statement. While anyone who puts methanol on their hands is at risk, officials say young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning. The FDA says consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizers with methanol who are experiencing symptoms should seek treatment immediately. The FDA says it is especially concerned with:The dangers of drinking any hand sanitizer under any conditions. While hand sanitizers with possible methanol contamination are more life-threatening than those that are not contaminated, FDA urges consumers not to drink any of these products.Certain hand sanitizers that may not contain a sufficient amount of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.Hand sanitizers that are sold or offered for sale with false and misleading, unproven claims that they can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19, including claims that they can provide prolonged protection (e.g., for up to 24-hours).Products that are fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved” since there are no hand sanitizers approved by FDA.Products packaged to appear as drinks, candy or liquor bottles, as well as products marketed as drinks or cocktails because their appearance could result in accidental ingestion or encourage ingestion. Children are particularly at risk with these products since ingesting only a small amount of hand sanitizer may be lethal in a young child.Below is a list of the products in the warning:CompanyProduct(s)NDCProduct statusGrupo Insoma, S.A.P.I de CV (Mexico)Hand sanitizer Gel Unscented 70% Alcohol75744-0200-375744-0200-475744-0201-575744-0202-175744-0250-175744-0250-275744-0500-175744-1000-175744-1000-375744-1001-1FDA tested product; contains methanol; FDA recommended a recall on 07/01/2020Transliquid Technologies (Mexico)Mystic Shield Protection hand sanitizer75477-435-0275477-435-1075477-435-1275477-435-2575477-435-5075477-534-10Contains methanolSoluciones Cosmeticas SA de CV (Mexico)Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel Fragrance Free75165-003-0275165-004-0175165-005-0175165-006-0175165-008-0175165-250-0175165-600-01FDA tested product; contains methanol; FDA recommended a recall on 07/01/2020Soluciones Cosmeticas SA de CV (Mexico)Antiseptic Alcohol 70% Topical Solution hand sanitizerNot listedFDA tested product; contains methanol; FDA recommended a recall on 07/01/2020Tropicosmeticos SA de CV (Mexico)Britz Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 70%76676-402-0177676-402-0277676-402-0377676-402-0477676-402-0577676-402-0677676-402-0777676-402-0877676-402-0977676-402-1077676-402-1177676-402-1277676-402-1377676-402-1477676-402-1677676-402-1777676-402-1877676-402-1977676-402-20FDA tested product; contains methanol; FDA recommended a recall on 07/01/2020Eskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)All-Clean Hand Sanitizer74589-002-01Product purported to be made at the same facilityEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer74589-007-01Product purported to be made at the same facilityEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer74589-006-01FDA tested product; contains methanolEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer74589-010-10Product purported to be made at the same facilityEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol74589-005-03Product purported to be made at the same facilityEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol74589-009-01FDA tested product; contains methanolEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol74589-003-01Product purported to be made at the same facilityEskbiochem SA de CV (Mexico)Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer74589-001-01Product purported to be made at the same facility; product recalled by Saniderm Products and UVT Inc.Click here for more information. This story was originally published by staff at WFTS, with contributions from WTXL. 4799

The wild ride on Wall Street just got crazier. The Dow dropped about 345 points, or 1.4%, on Tuesday, completely reversing a 244-point gain from early in the day. The selloff followed Monday's 670-point spike. The Nasdaq plunged nearly 3% -- wiping out nearly all of Monday's huge gains for the tech sector. The Nasdaq is now up just 1.5% on the year.Facebook, Twitter, Tesla and Nvidia all fell sharply. Netflix tumbled 6%, its biggest decline in two years."We started bleeding when large tech got hit hard," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley B.Investors poured money into bonds Tuesday. The 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 2.77%, the lowest since early February. But the sinking yields also narrowed the closely-watched gap between short and long-term rates, known as the yield curve."That has persistently been a signal of an economic slowdown," said Hogan. "I don't think that's the case here."A "flattening" yield curve also makes it harder for banks to make money on the difference between what they lend out and pay interest on. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and PNC fell more than 2% apiece.The-CNN-Wire 1135
The Washington Post's executive editor condemned a robocall made during the U.S. Senate race in Alabama. "Hi, this is Bernie Bernstein," the caller says, according to The Hill. "I’m a reporter for The Washington Post calling to find out if anyone at this address is a female between the ages of 54 to 57 years old willing to make damaging remarks about candidate Roy Moore for a reward of between ,000 and ,000 dollars," says the caller. "We will not be fully investigating these claims. However, we will make a written report."The call comes after the Washington Post reported on four women accusing Republican candidate Roy Moore of pursuing them when the women were between the ages of 14 and 18. Moore was in his 30s at the time. In a later report, a fifth woman accused Moore of sexual misconduct. 835
The Seattle Seahawks postponed a workout with free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick after Kaepernick declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem, ESPN reports.According to ESPN, the Seahawks contacted the former 49ers quarterback two weeks ago to arrange a workout. However, the meeting was canceled at the last minute over the constroversial protest.Kaepernick began kneeling for the national anthem during the 2016 preseason, saying he was hoping to bring attention to police brutality. He continued his protest through the 2016 season, and his contract with the 49ers was not extended following the season.Kaepernick has not played since the 2016, though he is still a free agent and can be signed by any team. In October, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL alleging the owners colluded to blackball him from the league. He was deposed by the league in connection with his complaint earlier this week.Kaepernick's former teammate and fellow free agent Eric Reid was also reportedly asked by Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown about kneeling during the anthem during a workout with the team. Reid said he would continue kneeling, and the Bengals did not offer Reid a contract.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @alexhider. 1355
