College students and loans seem to go hand in hand, and student loan debt is an ever increasing problem in the U.S.But it might surprise you what some college students are doing with any excess loan money they may have after paying for things like tuition, books, and housing.A study by the Student Loan Report found that approximately one out of every five students with loans have used loan money in some form to invest in cryptocurrencies—in other words, things like Bitcoin.But financial advisers caution that may not be the best decision.“My gut reaction,” said financial advisor Martin Walsh with Brown and Tedstrom, “is that it’s probably a bad idea.”Walsh said using borrowed dollars to invest in speculative assets, such as Bitcoin, would make him “very nervous.”Cryptocurrency is the formal word for a type of digital money that uses encryption to transfer funds, independently of a central bank.Walsh cautions: “buyer beware.”“There’s been a ton of talk about cryptocurrency over the last year,” Walsh said, “mostly because of the massive run up in price.”Bitcoin — the biggest player in the Crypto game—saw prices for their “coins” at around ,000 in December. COSTA MESA (CNS) - The state Attorney General's Office Friday agreed with Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer that Cary Jay Smith, who was recently released from a state mental health hospital and ended up in Costa Mesa, must register as a sex offender.Smith, who is being evaluated at a mental health facility in Costa Mesa after moving around four Southern California counties since his release, could be re-admitted to a mental health hospital, Spitzer told City News Service."They could recommit him or release him," Spitzer said. "But at least now we'll know where he is."That's because the state Attorney General's Office agreed with the analysis done by Spitzer's office that Smith was mistakenly told he no longer had to register as a sex offender. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order that state prosecutors serve Smith with paperwork demanding he register as a sex offender, Spitzer said."They reviewed the paper we submitted and agreed he has to register," Spitzer said.Smith's court files for a conviction in 1983 had been expunged, but there was still paperwork in another case from the mid-1980s that showed he was convicted of a sex crime that required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Spitzer said.In the other case, the crime for which he was convicted no longer requires defendants to register as a sex offender, Spitzer said."The bottom line is at a minimum he will now have to register," Spitzer said.According to the letter from Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the Orange County Superior Court "informed" his office that "no criminal records were found relating to this individual."Becerra said his office "diligently" worked to obtain documentation of Smith's criminal history and obtained a record that supports Smith's requirement to register as a sex offender.Smith showed up in Garden Grove on Monday and then moved to Santa Ana, but by Wednesday had moved on to a facility in Costa Mesa. It was his eighth stop since being released from Coalinga State Hospital on July 14.Smith was dogged by protests wherever he landed, which included stays in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.Smith spent 21 years at Coalinga State Hospital for openly fantasizing about raping and killing children."In not renewing the commitment, the state hospital determined that Mr. Smith was no longer a danger to others," Smith's attorney, Staycie Sena, said in a statement. "He has received decades of treatment. We must trust the rehabilitative process."Mr. Smith is under constant police surveillance, is cooperating fully with various law enforcement agencies and is working with mental health professionals to ensure the safety of the community."Sena told City News Service in an email that the protesters who have been gathering outside various locations where Smith was staying were endangering public safety themselves."Please understand that by continuing to chase him down, you are contributing to a potential community disaster," Sena said. CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A Florida social studies teacher has been "removed" from the classroom after being accused in a recent Huffington Post article of having a white nationalist podcast and secretly bringing her beliefs into the classroom. Dayanna Volitich has worked at Crystal River Middle School in Citrus County since 2016, but online she used the pseudonym Tiana Dalichov."I get to talk about topics that people don't like to talk about. They don't want to be seen as a bigot, racist, whatever you want to call it. I honestly don't care," said Volitich.That's a snippet from the podcast "Unapologetic" previewing the topics listeners can expect to hear. The Huffington Post article says the podcast is actually hosted by the 25-year-old Volitich. In one of her podcasts, she talks about putting on a "dog and pony show" for administrators during her first year, when it comes to teaching certain curriculum. "I told the kids that. I said, 'Guys, when they are in here, I’m going to be different than I usually am. I just don’t want you to be shocked. I want you to play along and they’re like, 'OK. OK,'" she said in the podcast.During that same podcast, Volitich brings up a science fair project from Sacramento that was taken down after she says people deemed it racist. She tells her guest she believes it scientifically proves certain races have higher IQs than others. When her guest asks if kids tell their parents what they learn in class, she says the principal approached her over an email from a parent once, but dropped it. "I had one at the beginning of this year who emailed the principal over my head and basically told her I’m worried that your teacher is injecting political bias into her teaching. And the principal came to me and she was like, 'I’m not worried, should I be worried?' CVS says they are planning to expand their COVID-19 testing services.On Wednesday, the pharmacy chain announced that it would add rapid-result COVID testing at nearly 1,000 sites by the end of the year."Access to rapid-result tests enables us to help minimize community spread of COVID-19 by being able to more quickly identify active COVID-19 infection," said David Fairchild, MD, Chief Medical Officer, MinuteClinic in a press release. "In addition, we can test and treat symptomatic patients who test negative for COVID-19 for seasonal illnesses such as flu or strep and provide appropriate treatment and care."CVS said starting this week nearly 100 of the rapid-result test sites will be operational.If patients meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, the tests would be made available at no cost.Currently, CVS manages more than 4,000 drive-thru test sites in 33 states and Washington, D.C., with results coming back within 2-3 days.To schedule an appointment, you must register in advance at CVS.com. Tests are available for patients between 12-17 years old.
