SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Thousands of people got their vaccinations Saturday, to kick off this year's flu season. The vaccination event was held at four Kaiser Permanente locations in San Diego County. For Byron Frohm, a trip to Kaiser Permanente in Mid-September is an annual tradition. "I can't think of any reason not to get it," Frohm said. The reason he does get the flu shot is his perfect, 40-year flu-free record. He says the vaccinations help him ward off the dangerous bug. "This virus is very strong," Shreya Chandra, MD. said. "It is hitting our community, and getting the vaccination really is prevention."Last season, health officials recorded 77 deaths in San Diego County. In the 2017-2018 season, there were 343 deaths. This was the highest number of fatalities since the county began tracking flu data nearly two decades ago. Already this year, there has been one confirmed flu-related death. The county said a 74-year-old Chula Vista man died August 15, 2019, due to complications from Influenza B. All the more reason for 76-year-old Frohm to stick to his regimen. "At my age, I'm probably more susceptible," Frohm said. Other high-risk groups include pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, and other illnesses. Some symptoms of Influenza include high fever, severe body aches, nausea, sore throat, and fatigue. This could last up to two weeks. Many people mistake the signs to that of the common cold. Doctors say many people who have the flu do not show any symptoms. But they can still spread the illness."I can still carry it and pass it on to elderly parents or people who can potentially get really sick from this virus," Dr. Chandra said. That is why Dr. Chandra strongly recommends the annual vaccine. She believes the best treatment is prevention. "We have State-of-the-art care and medicine. We live in San Diego. But the point of this vaccination is that we never need State-of-the-art care. You never get sick in the first place," Dr. Chandra said. 1990

SAN DIEGO — The driver of the McLaren sports car involved in a fiery fatal crash on Interstate 805 Thursday has been identified.Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 sports car that collided with an SUV, killing himself, and a 43-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner. The mother and daughter have yet to be identified. The medical examiner is using an alternative means to identify the bodies because of how badly they were burned, according to the California Highway Patrol.Heitmann was traveling at a high rate of speed heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd.The two vehicles collided and exploded into flames, witnesses said, causing a chain reaction of crashes with at least five other vehicles.Heitmann was killed of blunt force trauma and pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner reported. The two occupants of the SUV died due to the fire which engulfed the vehicle after the crash, the report said. It's still not clear why Heitmann was traveling at such a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, his driving record was clear.CHP said Heitmann's vehicle was linked to an incident at Ashley Falls Elementary School in Carmel Valley before the crash, in which several students said the driver of a sports car drove through a fence. Del Mar Union School District said the driver got out of the car and broke a window, though no classes were in session.Heitmann is allegedly a popular YouTube personality who goes by the name of "McSkillet," according to numerous gaming website reports.McSkillet's YouTube page lists numerous videos surrounding the video game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive including "skins" or weapon customizations and tips on earning sponsors. One of the videos on McSkillet's page shows off a black McLaren and talks about how his earnings as a YouTube and Counter-Strike "Steam" content producer helped pay for the luxury sports car.Watch the CHP's press conference here:All lanes on northbound I- 805 at La Jolla Village Drive were shut down for about 10 hours due to the investigation and clean-up effort. 2426

San Diego City Council Tuesday night unanimously passed the location of a high-pressure underground pipeline to move sewage from San Diego's Morena treatment plant to a facility in Miramar. Residents say they're concerned the pipeline could break, wreaking havoc on the area. "Our concern is if that line was ruptured, bnecause it's under so miuch pressure, that it would spew raw sewage into the environment," said Ruth DeSantis, a longtime U.C. resident who heads the area's community foundation. DeSantis added that neighbors are concerned over traffic, noise, property values, and even smells seeping out of vents. There's a middle school, park, and hundreds of homes nearby. The city says it took various measures to minimize health and safety hazards, although some impacts like noise and traffic are unavoidable during construction.San Diego spokesman Jerry McCormick added that sewage geysers would not be possible under the pipeline system."Unlike a potable water system, where there are multiple loops to provide continuous pressure and in time of a rupture must be isolated by multiple valves, often times creating large releases of water, this system will not operate like that," McCormick said. "Instead, if there is a rupture, we can shut down the pumps and the flow will come to a very abrupt and quick stop."Community groups in University City are now teaming up with those in Clairemont to fight the project."We can put everything in Clairemont and Clairemont is sleeping, and I just wanted to say, that's not right," said Roseline Feral, of the nonprofit Clairemont Town Council. The city is aiming to have about a third of its water supply be reclaimed water by 2035. That would help combat shortages and price increases.                                       1922

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- For the first time in decades, NASA is moving closer to sending people to the moon, or even Mars. Naval Base San Diego is playing a key role in that process. This week the USS John P. Murtha left Naval Base San Diego to test recovery efforts of NASA’s mock Orion capsule.“We’re going to ensure that once it comes down, once it hits that water, that everything from then on is totally safe,” says Retired Navy Pilot and President of the San Diego Air & Space Museum Jim Kidrick. The amphibious ship sends a crew into the Pacific Ocean, then uses smaller boats to guide the capsule back to the USS Murtha. The Orion has an environmental control system, a heat shield that can withstand 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, radiation control and parachutes. NASA says the first recovery test aboard the USS Murtha was a success.“By the time they put people in that capsule its going to work flawlessly.” Naval Base San Diego will be removing the Orion test model from the USS Murtha and putting in on display tomorrow.10News will be there to give you a personal look at the capsule. 1095
