SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More local employees are losing their employer health insurance benefits during the COVID-19 crisis.10News was contacted about employees at the San Marcos Veterinary Clinic who were apparently working just as many hours but their medical benefits have been dropped.10News spoke to the owner of the clinic on Thursday who said she was forced to make the tough and emotional call to drop her 13 employees' health benefits, including her own, in order to keep them on the payroll and keep the clinic’s lights on during the pandemic. She said the decision was made out of desperation. Not greed.On Thursday, 10News interviewed Anthony Wright with Health Access California, a consumer advocacy group. “A stay in the hospital for say seven or ten days on a ventilator, which is the treatment for having a severe case of this virus, could be in the tens of thousands of dollars if you're not covered” he told 10News.So, what if you lose your coverage during the pandemic? Wright told 10News that Californians can try COBRA, which temporarily extends your same employer-based health plan, but there’s a downside. “That's a very expensive option for most people,” he added.Wright said a better option could be Covered California, the state's health insurance marketplace that allows individuals to buy coverage at federally subsidized rates.Covered California’s open enrollment period has been extended through June, amid concerns over the virus. “How much Covered California costs is very much dependent on your current income. It's a percentage of your income on a sliding scale,” he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than .5 million in fentanyl was seized during a traffic stop in the South Bay this week.A 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor was stopped for a speeding violation on Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m. heading westbound on State route 905, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO). Border Patrol agents and SDSO Border Crime Suppression detectives searched the vehicle with a K-9 officer and discovered 20 kilograms of powdered fentanyl concealed in the vehicle. Powdered fentanyl is commonly used to produce fake pharmaceutical drugs, SDSO said.RELATED: Drug experts warn of Carfentanil in San DiegoThe seized narcotics have a street value of more than .5 million, according to SDSO.SDSO said the driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Marilu Escamilla, and her boyfriend, 36-year-old Fernando Camargo, were arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail for felony transportation of controlled substances and other related charges.SDSO said seizures of fentanyl have become increasingly common in San Diego County. Authorities added they regularly seize counterfeit Oxycodone and Xanax pills, which contain fentanyl. According to the county, fentanyl deaths spiked 155 percent from 33 in 2016 to 84 in 2017. Fentanyl is roughly 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. 1403

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man in City Heights Wednesday afternoon.According to San Diego Police, the man was shot in the back at the intersection of Fairmont Avenue and Thorn Street near Clark Middle School and Manzanita Canyon.The shooter left the area with two other men, according to San Diego Police officer Billy Hernandez. The three were described as Asian men, one in a white shirt with the letters "SD" on it in red printing, the others in black shirts, Hernandez said.Police shut down traffic near the shooting scene and searched the area with a helicopter and ground crews. Officers found a gun possibly connected to the case in an alley. There was no sign of the shooter.Paramedics took the shooting victim to the hospital.
