(KGTV) - Escondido firefighters engineered a makeshift sling to save a horse stuck at the bottom of a ravine Thursday.The fire department got a call about the horse stuck near Via Conejo near Lake Hodges in South Escondido about 4:30 p.m.Firefighters said the horse was on its side and could not stand due to rocks and steep terrain.A veterinarian and a San Diego Animals Services officer helped firefighters improvise a sling and bring the horse to level ground.The horse was able to walk back to its corral unharmed.No one was injured in the process of saving the animal. 609

(KGTV) — As San Diego County rolls back again into the more-restrictive purple tier, the city of Escondido is coming together to make sure their small businesses survive the newest rollback.In Escondido, Carol Rogers is involved with the Downtown Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce, plus she also owns Stone and Glass, a glass blowing shop. It’s what’s kept us in business. It is the only thing that’s kept us in business,” said Rogers.She said she and the organizations she works with have created different plans to help all small businesses. During the summer, they closed down a lane of traffic along the main street and added cement barricades, creating a space for stores to add tables to the sidewalks. Some types of businesses were able to use the space, but others were not.“What we found is the restaurants did it. I works for the restaurants, but retail is not using the space,” she said, discussing the outdoor sidewalk addition.In the spirit of unity, they decided to not waste the outdoor space, so Rogers created an art walk that happened Saturday, Nov. 14. Artists and creators were able to move into unused street space and host pop-up shops, giving them business that has been missing since their local Second Saturday stopped in March.In addition to the stores moving outside and artists popping up for a Saturday afternoon, the community has also stepped up to add life to the cement barricades that block off the outdoor sidewalk space. Starting in the summer, a few cement blocks were painted by artists, and that has continued. Now, Grand Avenue is lined with multi-colored pieces of art.“There’s been professional artists, there’s been people that just want to paint, there’s children,” said artist Tristan Pittard, who was working on his cement canvas Saturday.Pittard said the art is an additional motivator for people to visit the area and support local businesses.“Art in general affects peoples psyche and public art is important for that because people might not be exposed to art otherwise,” said Pittard.For Rogers, the combination of the art walk with the painted cement shows the unity of the people, and gives her hope that Escondido will survive another rollback. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. Elizabeth Holmes, a Silicon Valley businesswoman whose biotech company Theranos was once valued at billion, will reportedly attempt to claim “mental disease” in her criminal trial, according to multiple reports.Court filings released this week indicate Holmes’ lawyers want to introduce evidence “relating to a mental disease or defect or any other mental condition of the defendant bearing on the issue of guilt.” However, details of what exactly her mental state is, or what the lawyers intend to argue are redacted.Holmes founded Theranos as a Stanford drop-out at age 19. She, and her former romantic partner and Theranos president Sunny Balwani, face fraud charges for claiming their company’s machines could perform several diagnostic tests with just a single drop of blood.The prosecution says the pair knew all along the technology wasn’t capable of doing the tests as promised, and allegedly defrauded investors, doctors and patients. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead and a driver is at large following a hit-and-run collision in Escondido.A vehicle collided with a bicyclist on La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway at about noon, according to the Escondido Police Department."The rider was wearing a helmet, and we are still investigating the cause as to what happened and how the car and bicyclist crashed," Lt. Scott Walters with the Escondido Police Department said. The cyclist was part of a larger group going southbound on La Honda Drive. Witnesses of the crash saw the 36-year-old victim from Vista fly off his mountain bike and die at the scene. Investigator said the driver of the car never stopped and continued going northbound on La Honda Drive. A short while later, investigators got a break in the case. The mangled car was spotted on the 600-block of Aster Street, just a half-mile away from the crash site. 10News spoke to neighbors watching the commotion, who said they did not recognize the sedan. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Police advised the public to avoid the area for about five hours after the crash. Access to Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch Recreation Areas was closed, but hikers and bikers were able to access Daley Ranch through Cougar Pass in north Escondido, police added. 1312
