A romance between two lost, lonely women who seize a chance at fulfillment in their forbidden affair, "Ammonite" is a methodical art film with plenty to savor.Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan -- who have 11 Oscar nominations between them and maybe in the running to add a couple more to the pile -- simmer with understated performances, allowing nuances and gestures to speak worlds that dialogue can't match. Their screentime together lifts the film to its greatest heights, conjuring a simmering dynamic that infuses excitement into the moribund story.The historical fiction drama, set in the 1840s, imagines the personal life of pioneering British paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet), who was marginalized by the scientific community boy's club. Reduced to peddling fossils to wealthy tourists in order to support her ailing mother (Gemma Jones), Mary develops an exterior as hard and impenetrable as the bones and rocks she unearths.Mary grudgingly agrees to make some extra money by caring for Charlotte (Ronan), the ailing wife dumped off on her by one of her clients. At first, Mary sees Charlotte as a privileged nuisance who can't connect to her life of science and struggle, but they find common interests and angsts, causing the ice between them to slowly crack. They steal moments of intimacy amid their struggle-filled life, finding joy and passion neither imagined was waiting for them. Left unspoken -- but weighing heavily all along -- is the realization that the social values and customs of the time all but doom their prospects.Director Francis Lee ("God's Own Country") shows an eye for sweeping visuals and an ear for intimate moments. He's not as adept at infusing his story with much urgency, though. Many scenes unfold as lingering tone poems meant to set the scene and color the characters. The drawback is that the movie moves so slowly that it's easy to lose interest and drift away."Ammonite" is often as dull and opaque as its title, but worth watching for the two lead performances, as well as its intricately spun tale of a complicated friendship and love. A video of a woman who was allegedly resisting arrest while being beaten by police officers on a New Jersey beach on Saturday has been shared 1,000s of times since being published. Emily Weinman, a resident of Philadelphia, claimed that officers questioned her about underage drinking while she was on a beach in Wildwood, New Jersey. Weinman claimed that she was given an alcohol breath test, which came back negative. Weinman added in a Facebook post that the officers from the Wildwood, New Jersey Police were going to let her go, but when she asked officers why they were enforcing underage drinking rather than more serious crimes, that is when the officers had a change of heart. Weinman said that officers asked for her to identify herself, which she refused to do. Weinman claims an officer said, "I was gonna let you go but now I'll write you up." 894

A Pennsylvania man is facing criminal charges for allegedly requesting and casting ballots for dead relatives.The Delaware County District Attorney announced the charges against Bruce Bartman Monday.“We are charging him today with two counts of perjury for making false statements to register two deceased individuals who are his relatives both his mother and his mother-in-law. He made false statements through the state’s assure system to register them as voters and he’s also charged with making an unlawful vote because he actually submitted an absentee ballot for his deceased mother, a ballot that was counted,” District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said at a press conference.Stollsteimer says both women were registered as Republicans and Bartman told investigators he had done so to help reelect Donald Trump.Bartman reportedly used the driver’s license number for his mother, who died more than a decade ago, and was able to obtain a ballot.Prosecutors say he used his mother-in-law’s social security number to register her for the general election, and the system returned a deceased record for her prompting the state to send a confirmation letter to the address to confirm the information, according to WPVI.Stollsteimer’s office says Bartman falsified this confirmation letter and returned it to register his mother-in-law to vote. He did not obtain a ballot in her name, according to prosecutors.“In his political frustration, he chose to do something stupid,” Bartman’s lawyer, Samuel Stretton told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “And for that he is very sorry.”Stollsteimer said there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Delaware County and this was the only case of voter fraud during this election his office has encountered. However, they have had scores of leads investigators have followed up on.Investigators said rumors on social media about a dead voter in Delaware County led to a complaint filed with the county’s Board of Elections. A task force followed up and found evidence of a crime, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.This incident is the third instance of reported voter fraud in Pennsylvania since the election last month, the Inquirer reported.Previous reports include a man who cast two ballots on Election Day, one for himself and one in the name of his son, and of a man who allegedly applied for a ballot for his dead mother. A potential tropical cyclone is looking to wreak havoc on Central America in the next few days.Known as "Potential Tropical Cyclone 14" by the National Hurricane Center, the storm is expected to form in the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Sunday, with heavy rains heading for western Cuba.The system is expected to become a tropical depression late Saturday or Sunday and become a tropical storm by Sunday night, the center said. On the current forecast track, the center said the system is expected to move across the Yucatan Channel near the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula through Sunday night, and then move into the southern Gulf of Mexico on Monday.There is a tropical storm watch for the coast of Mexico from Tulum to Cabo Catoche, where tropical storm conditions are possible Sunday and Monday. There is also a tropical storm warning for the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Rio and the Isle of Youth.Currently, the storm is moving north at 7 mph. It is 120 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, and is 240 miles south-southwest of the western tip of Cuba, according to the hurricane center's 11 p.m. ET update Saturday.The storm may also produce 3 to 7 inches of rain in western Cuba and 2 to 4 inches over the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize and northern Honduras through Tuesday. The diagnosis is subjective and every doctor manages it differently as the injury is just as complex as the brain.“When you have a heart attack and go into the ER, you get five objective tests. If you get a brain injury and you go into the ER, you get, ‘Follow my finger, what month is it, who’s the president?’ We have to do better for brain-injured patients,” Dr. Rosina Samadani, CEO of Oculogica, said.Samadani developed a device called the "Eye Box.” Her sister, a neurosurgeon, discovered the technology.“Where it really came from was noticing that when there’s a deficit in the cranial nerves, there is a deficit in eye movements and there is that same deficit that occurs in concussed patients.,” Samadani said.So, she created an algorithm based on those eye movements, which is how the Eye Box was born.“We’re looking at your pupils, we’re tracking them and having you perform a simple task,” Samadani said. “You watch a video as it moves around the screen and we watch your eyes watching that video and that’s it.”The sisters took the idea to TitletownTech.“We look for exceptional founders who are solving meaningful problem,” said Jill Enos, the managing director of TitletownTech.The venture capital fund builds and invests in startups.“TitletownTech was formed out of this improbable partnership between the Green Bay packers and Microsoft, both of whom shared a common interest in advancing the technology capabilities of the region but also in leveraging the strength of startups and founders as economic drivers in the regional economy,” Enos said.Enos says Oculogica immediately caught their attention.
