"China has been a strong partner for Africa on many fronts," he said, noting that China has been Africa's largest trading partner for over a decade and the two sides have implemented a number of development projects through the Belt and Road Initiative.

"But the threat from vehicle exhaust deserves more attention because it will contribute more to the air pollution in Beijing in the future," he said, adding that emissions from coal consumption and industrial production have been cut significantly in recent years.

"China is certainly building more nuclear power plants than any other country, so to that extent it is leading the world," he said.

"China hopes to strengthen cooperation with the US on developing clean energy, carbon capture technologies and other issues. Our cooperation with the US at the state level has progressed quite well and never stopped," he said.

"China has come a long, long way. It's been credited for that," he added.
