BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Monday urged Party cadres to regard the well-being of the people always as a top priority in order to best achieve the governing purpose of the Party.Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at the school's opening ceremony for spring semester.Xi said the Party officials should remember that serving the peole is a basic requirement for the CPC which seeks to apply fundamental Marxist theories to China's socialist cause and modernization drive.Xi called on Party officials to apply Marxist theories to analyzing and solving matters that arise during China's modernization drive in their study of the theoretical system of the socialism with Chinese characteristics.About 1,800 people, including Party officials attending the school's spring sememster and lecturers of the school, attended Monday's ceremony.
SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea plans to launch a joint research with China and Japan on the feasibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) among the three Northeast Asian countries, South Korea's foreign ministry said Wednesday.According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.Currently, South Korea has free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore and the European Free Trade Association, as well as a similar pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.Recently reaching a free trade deal with the European Union, the country also wrapped up its free trade talks with India, settling the so-called comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in August.With respect to the free trade deal with the United States, signed in June 2007, both countries are waiting for legislative approval.South Korea is also seeking similar trade deals with Australia, Canada, and Mexico.

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, held a meeting Friday to discuss the agenda for the upcoming CPPCC annual session in March.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presided over the opening ceremony of the three-day meeting.During the meeting, senior political advisors will set an agenda for the third session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, discuss and approve a work report for the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and a namelist for the secretariat of the March session.Political advisors on Friday also heard annual work reports from the committees of the CPPCC National Committee.The CPPCC reflects China's "multi-party cooperation system" under the leadership of the CPC.The CPPCC committees at different levels have representatives from different political groups, ethnic groups, and people of all walks of life.
BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has encouraged students from Xinjiang who are attending school in southern Guangdong Province to study hard and become qualified builders of the country.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when replying to a letter written by the 12th graders of Guangdong Guangya High School on Sunday, or the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year.Zhou visited the time-honored school in Guangzhou, capital of the southern province, last September and talked with the students from northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They wrote a letter to Zhou before the Spring Festival, which fell on Sunday.Zhou said in the letter that launching classes for high school students from Xinjiang in inland provinces is a major decision made by the Party and the government. It aims to let Xinjiang's children to enjoy better education so they can grow up healthily and make greater contributions to their hometown and the country.Zhou said the 56 ethnic groups in the country are a family and they have gone through thick and thin together to forge the flesh-and-blood ties.Zhou said the Party and government are exerting great efforts to address major issues including development gap between southern Xinjiang and other western regions, and the eastern coastal regions of the country.He told students that the CPC Central Committee is to hold a meeting on Xinjiang work, at which major decision will be made to boost Xinjiang's development. BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers Wednesday called for improving the country's food safety supervision network after a nationwide law enforcement inspection tour.National lawmakers started the inspection tour last September after the Food Safety Law took effect last June.Lu Yongxiang, vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, told lawmakers that many regions had not completed reform of the food safety supervision mechanism.Most of the cities and counties had not started the reform yet, Lu said at a three-day bimonthly session of the top legislature that started Wednesday, when presenting a report of the inspection tour.He called for stronger coordination led by health departments.The report suggested establishing a national food safety risk assessment center and a food safety standard management system.Earlier this month, the State Council set up a food safety commission consisting of three vice premiers and a dozen minister-level officials.The lineup of the commission's members includes Vice Premiers Li Keqiang, Hui Liangyu and Wang Qishan, as well as more than ten heads or vice heads of government departments in charge of health, finance, and agriculture among other portfolios.The establishment of the commission followed a string of nationwide crackdowns and arrests in the wake of new melamine-tainted milk products being found in Shanghai as well as Liaoning, Shandong and Shaanxi in recent months.
