SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents of San Diego County are still disposing of more waste than the average Californian, according to a report by the research group Equinox Project at the Center for Sustainable Energy.According to the report, San Diego continues to dispose of more waste per capita than any of the other major urban counties throughout the state.The latest numbers, which came out in 2016, show that each San Diegan tossed out an average of 5.5 pounds of trash per day in 2016.Within San Diego County, residents in Del Mar disposed of the most trash at 16.5 pounds per capita.Residents of Imperial Beach, however, disposed of the least trash at 3.3 pounds per person followed by Chula Vista at 3.7 pounds per capita.The numbers show that three jurisdictions, Solana Beach, Lemon Grove and Coronado, decreased their waste disposal in 2016.Residents of within the city of San Diego disposed of 5.9 pounds of waste per person per day.The numbers below show how much trash per capita jurisdictions around the county disposed of: 1052

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are remembering Talk Show Host and Entertainer Regis Philbin after he passed away Friday.Philbin's first television appearance was on the Regis Philbin Show at ABC 10News. Back then we were called KOGO TV."He never forgot where he started in television and that was right here in San Diego and he loved talking about it," Radio Personality and Friend Shotgun Tom Kelly said.Kelly rescued a couple old photos from the newsroom before they were thrown out depicting Regis' time at ABC 10News. One shows a youthful Philbin standing with the news crew in front of two rows of cars and a KOGO TV van.Another shows him at the Regis Philbin Show desk."I came to Channel 10 in 1960 and I think Regis started in 1961." Former Chief Photographer Lee Louis said he was 19-years-old at the time. He said Philbin seemed like a father figure back then, but he later realized Philbin was only 29.His most memorable assignment with Philbin was when Jayne Mansfield came to town. He said they "went to the old Lindbergh Field terminal off Pacific Highway before they even built the new terminal... He interviewed Jane Mansfield and as we talked about earlier, somewhere I have a black and white picture of him interviewing Jane Mansfield."Louis said he didn't realize until he saw Philbin on national television, what an icon he would become.Philbin's success, according to Kelly, was partially due to advice Philbin received from a San Diego Union Tribune Columnist named Don Freeman. Kelly said Philbin had just left the Navy and wanted to work in television. He said Philbin loved reading Freeman's articles and mustered up the courage to go meet him and talk about breaking into the business. Kelly said he gave him this advice, "I think you've got a future, the one thing that's going to make you stand out is be yourself. And that's what Regis was, he was always himself. If you met Regis in person, it would be the same way you saw him on television."That relatable personality drew millions of fans over the years, including Louis."I still enjoyed watching Regis and Kelly Live and 'yeah I knew that guy,' I started with him, or he started with me, I don't know which," Louis said smiling. Kelly said he had the privilege of hosting a Hollywood Media Professionals luncheon last year honoring Philbin's career. He wanted to surprise Philbin and brought out his first photographer. "Regis was overjoyed, it was just wonderful. I mean it was just a great surprise to pull that on a celebrity."Kelly said he would be missed."At least he didn't die of the virus [coronavirus]. It sounds like he went naturally. It sounds like he was home, I'm sure his family was around him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego churches have an idea to help solve the housing crisis. They want to build affordable housing on their unused land.UPLIFT San Diego is leading the effort, called YIGBY (Yes in God's Back Yard)."There are 1,100 churches in San Diego County with over 3,000 acres of property," says UPLIFT leader Tom Theisen. "If just 10% of those churches, 100 churches, were to build 20-30 units each, we're talking thousands of units of housing."Theisen used to serve as the Board President of the San Diego Task Force on the Homeless. He's now spearheading the YIGBY effort for UPLIFT."I can't tell you how many faith communities have called me and asked what they can do to help," he says. "I have a hard time telling them to hand out blankets and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They want to do something that makes a difference, and housing makes a difference."Theisen says he already has 12 churches that want to build housing.One church that is already working to make the idea a reality is Clairemont Lutheran Church. They have a plan to build as many as 21 units on land that is currently part of their parking lot."Using our parking lot for something other than empty weeds growing seems like a good idea," says Pastor Jonathan Doolittle."We want something that works in the scale of our neighborhood, so our neighbors don't notice a huge change," he says. "But, we want it to be large enough to make a difference in the lives of those who need a place to live."Doolittle shared preliminary floor plans and renderings of the apartments. He says the church has been trying to get the project going for four years, but red tape keeps holding it up.One problem is changing zoning rules on the land. The other is parking regulations with the city.The plan would take 20 spots out of the parking lot. City law requires a certain number of parking spaces per church based on pew capacity. Without those 20 spots, the church would be under the legal requirement.Doolittle says his church only reaches capacity on major holidays. The rest of the year, those spots sit empty. He also pointed out that the church is on a transit corridor, and new city laws saw affordable housing is not required to have parking along transit corridors.UPLIFT has already met with Mayor Kevin Faulconer to discuss ways to ease those requirements on churches and other faith-based organizations that want to build affordable housing units. Theisen says churches would be more sensitive to concerns within the neighborhood than a private developer."These projects are self-sufficient," he says. "We can do as many of them as we have willing churches to work with us."UPLIFT hopes that a successful start to the YIGBY project will spur similar development. He thinks unused land owned by non-profit groups, health centers and even the City of San Diego could also be used for housing. 2888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego gyms are closing amid coronavirus, forcing residents to work out from home and sparking many tips on how to stay fit amid COVID-19. 24-Hour fitness, a popular San Diego gym, sent out a message Monday night noting that the gym would close March 16 until further notice. "As we all grapple with the enormous scale and impact of the coronavirus in the U.S., it reminds us of how precious life is and the importance of protecting our own health," CEO Tony Ueber said in a news release.
