SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans fighting for rent control is bringing their battle to city leaders this week.The group San Diego Tenants United is calling for city leaders to pass a rent control ordinance to curb the skyrocketing cost of living in San Diego.In a letter to San Diego's Smart Growth & Land Use Committee Chair Georgette Gomez, the group requested a new rent control ordinance and amendment to San Diego's Just Cause Eviction ordinance to prohibit landlords from increasing rents or displacing families.RELATED: San Diego group calling for rent controlThe group believes a permanent ordinance and amendment will slow the rate of increase in local rents and stifle the local housing crises."This can make real, effective changes that can truly fight displacement and gentrification," the letter to Gomez reads. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Families worried about paying back rent due to the pandemic are getting more time.Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted 5-4 to extendthe rent repayment period for commercial and residential renters to December 30, giving renters who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic a few extra months to repay back rent.Council President Georgette Gomez's initial motion Tuesday would haveextended the repayment period for the eviction moratorium to March 31, 2021.Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell amended the motion to the December date as a compromise.On March 25, the council voted unanimously to begin an emergencyeviction moratorium for renters. The moratorium requires renters to demonstrate through documentation that the pandemic has caused "substantial loss of income," according to city staff.Renters are also required to follow the rules in leases, but landlords cannot evict a tenant for nonpayment due to COVID-19.During the meeting, the council heard from landlords and realtors who say renters are taking advantage of the situation."The blanket moratorium has given criminals a free pass at the full expense of landlords, this is not a one size fits all," said property manager Claudia Cooper.Other callers said it would be a disaster to evict families just as children are starting school from home."Folks will be evicted and this pandemic won't be over anytime soon as the presentation mentioned, a lot of children are going to be learning from home and to be evicted right as school starts is just going to exacerbate the effect this pandemic has had on our kids," said one caller.Many callers said evictions must be prevented to avoid adding to the homeless problem."Many people have been out of work and eviction could mean death," said another caller.The moratorium on evictions expires September 30. Disbursements from that pool of relief money are scheduled to be handed out in late August or early September. Those funds will go directly to landlords, however, and not renters.Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry voted no on the motion Tuesday,not because she didn't agree that people needed help paying rent, but because the arbitrary nature of the rental relief program could leave the city open for lawsuits, she said. She added that not enough renters know the impact of not paying rent."It's a cruel hoax," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bill created to improve warehouse working conditions has passed the state's Senate Labor Committee.Assembly Bill 3056, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, ensures warehouse workers can take a restroom break, use a hand-washing station, drink water, or take a legally mandated break without fear of being fired.“We shouldn’t need to write a bill to make sure warehouse workers are able to take a restroom break or wash their hands without being reprimanded. But time and time again, Amazon has shown disregard for the safety of their workers -- even during this ongoing public health crisis,” Gonzalez said.AB 3056 not only applies to Amazon workers, but also to those who work at Target, Walmart, and other retailer warehouses.There has been an exponential rise in online sales leading to several companies adding automated systems to control the workflow. Worker productivity is monitored to determine whether someone has met a specified rate or quota of items pulled.Automated systems generate warnings when too many time-off tasks occur in a worker’s shift, and accumulated warnings can result in workers being fired without a human manager even being involved.The bill would establish civil penalties for an employer of 0 per employee for an initial violation, and ,000 per employee for subsequent violations. 1355
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two 7-Eleven stores located within two miles of each other in San Diego were robbed by a man with a gun and the suspect in each incident was at-large Saturday morning.The first occurred at 11:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Voltaire Street, near Catalina Boulevard, in the Point Loma Heights neighborhood, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect walked into the store and approached the clerk, then lifted his shirt and showed the clerk the handle of a gun in his waistband and demanded money. The clerk gave the suspect an unknown amount of money and the man ran out of the store southbound on Catalina Boulevard, Heims said.The second robbery occurred at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 3185 Midway Drive, near Sports Arena Boulevard, when a man walked into the store, lifted up his shirt and pulled a gun from his waistband, placed it on the counter facing the clerk and demanded money, Heims said.The clerk gave the gunman an unknown amount of money and the suspect put the gun back in his waistband then ran from the store northbound on East Drive into the Target parking lot, Heims said.In both robberies, the suspect was described as a white man, late 20s to early 30s, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with short brown hair and a mustache. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City leaders say they're making strides in overhauling its water department after a disastrous 2018. In a presentation to the Audit Committee Wednesday, city public utilities managers said they had implemented about a dozen reforms after a series of missteps last year. In 2018, thousands of San Diegans received erroneous water bills, which an audit largely blamed on human error. A later audit found that some meter box and lid replacement workers were fudging time cards amid a 22,000 unit backlog. Perkins said the Public Utilities Department has implemented new, efficient work strategies. These include getting workers out to the field faster, overhauling how customer service representatives interact with residents, and using software to pick routes that make sense. Previously, for example, workers could be sent to do water meter work in Rancho Bernardo only to be sent to San Ysidro.
