(KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center.The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations. Canned cocktails are also in the works for the brewery. In addition to the restaurant and bar, the location will also house a five-barrel brewing system and fermentation tanks.“Our goal is to shift the axis of brewing tourism to southern San Diego attracting downtown and northern San Diego residents and tourists to experience our work and our community. With other local breweries we can put Chula Vista on the map as an official destination of the beer and gastronomic map,” said Tiago Carneiro, founder of Novo Brazil Brewery.Carneiro says they intend to brew more than 100 different beers using the massive system in their first year alone. The new brewery will allow Novo to brew specialty beers and test new recipes. The result is a black and white wave pattern across the building — inside and out— representative of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. The bar, which owners say is the longest in the South Bay, curls around the facility and guests can kick back in furniture made from Brazilian wood around unique murals from Brazilian artists.“Our story began in Brazil, where we learned the art of brewing and created the most awarded brewery in South America," Carneiro said. "We believe our difference is our Brazilian way of showing the colorful culture and happiness of four homelands. (KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said. "(Charleston church shooter) Dylan Roof and many others. Are we referring to others by their religion? If not, then why are we singling out this community and referring to them by their religion."Gastelum is running against Incumbent Mary Salas, teacher Arthur Kende, and Parks Supervisor Daniel Schreck for the seat. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A former longtime employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon to felony charges of embezzlement. Danya Williams, 42, is charged with embezzling more than ,000 over 18 months beginning in June of 2017. Williams worked for the district for 17 years in the accounting department and most recently human resources. According to prosecutors, she was in charge of taking money orders to pay for background checks of job applicants. She's accused of altering the money orders; making them payable to herself. Prosecutors say she deposited 800 money orders into her own personal account. "Some that weren't hired can request them back. When some of them were asked for them back, they discovered they were never deposited into an account," said Deputy District Attorney Kimball Denton. Williams resigned from the district when the allegations surfaced. She's out of jail on a ,000 bond. She could face four years in prison if convicted. She has no criminal record. "It's very disappointing and sad when people who we trust within our school communities do brazen things like this that breach that trust and we're going to be holding her accountable for her actions." "She probably ranks in the top ten of the most nervous I've ever had. She's about to have a breakdown today. She's extremely nervous, and again, she's the nicest person you'll ever meet.
