During an emotional Staples Center memorial service for NBA legend Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka on Monday detailed text messages between him and Bryant, which may have been the last ever sent by Bryant. Pelinka said that Bryant had texted him while on board the doomed helicopter, which crashed into a Southern California hillside, killing Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others. The nine were en route to a basketball tournament where Bryant would coach his daughter Gianna’s team. Pelinka said he was at his church’s Sunday service at the time, where he normally does not check his phone. But Pelinka said he had the urge to check his phone as “a gentle, other worldly nudge compelled” him to open the message. Pelinka said that Bryant asked him if he knew of a certain baseball agent in Southern California. “Kobe texted back his desire to help a friend of his secure a baseball agency internship for one of his young daughters,” Pelinka said. “Kobe vouched for the girl’s character, intellect and work ethic; he clearly wanted to champion a bright future for her.” Pelinka responded back to Bryant to say he would put in a plan in place to get that done. “A handful of minutes later, Kobe and Gianna and seven other beautiful souls ascended into heaven,” he said. “Kobe had been texting me from the helicopter.“The girl in that text chain he wanted to help so badly was Lexi Altobelli, the surviving daughter of coach John Altobelli, who was on the helicopter. Kobe’s last human act was heroic. He wanted to use his platform to bless and shape a young girl’s future. Hasn’t Kobe done that for all of us?"Pelinka was one of Bryant's closest confidants. Before becoming the Lakers' GM, he was Bryant's long-time agent. Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 1843

Democrats concluded the second day of opening arguments in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Thursday.Thursday marked the second of three eight-hour sessions in which House impeachment managers will explain why they feel President Donald Trump should be removed from office. On Wednesday, lead impeachment manager Adam Schiff walked Senators step-by-step through Trump's dealings with Ukraine, in which Trump withheld foreign aid for weeks in the hopes that it would encourage new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open an investigation into one of his political rivals."(The president) does not, under our laws and under our constitution, have a right to use the powers of his office to corruptly solicit foreign aid, prohibited foreign aid, to help his re-election," Schiff said during his remarks Thursday.Watch Thursday's session below:Democrats claim Trump abused the power of his office by withholding military aid to Ukraine — a U.S. ally and a key part of the U.S.'s defense against Russia — in exchange for opening an investigation that would be politically advantageous to Trump.Trump pushed Zelensky to announce that publicly that Ukraine was opening an investigation into Hunter Biden — the son of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden — and his role as a board member for the Ukrainian energy company, Burisma. While he was vice president, Joe Biden pushed for the firing of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma. Obama administration officials maintain Shokin's firing was consistent with the U.S.'s strategy of rooting out corruption in Ukraine. During part of his remarks on Wednesday, Schiff pushed for Republicans to approve witnesses following opening arguments by both sides. "You should want the whole truth to come out. You should want to know about every player in this sordid business. It is within your power to do so," Schiff said. When setting rules for the impeachment trial, Republicans declined to include scheduled time for witnesses. Following opening arguments, senators most vote to approve additional witnesses with a majority vote. The Republican caucus currently holds a 53-47 advantage over the Democrat caucus, meaning four Republican senators would need to break party lines to approve witnesses. The Democrats' opening arguments will continue Friday when the trial resumes at 1 p.m. ET.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. CHICAGO (AP) — The coronavirus that has upended nearly every element of public life also has dramatically changed the way people grieve for the dead. Ministers have closed their doors to funerals. Fear of quarantine has prevented families from flying in to pay their last respects. Cemeteries have drastically altered what they do out of fear that some mourners who don't know they are infected with coronavirus might infect others. Some cemeteries aren’t allowing any graveside services at all. “We just take deceased up to the grave and bury them,” Terry Harmon, the owner of Orange, California’s Chapman Funeral Home, 633
DETROIT — More and more people are choosing to skip a conventional 911 call and ambulance ride during medical emergencies in favor of using Uber or Lyft — a decision experts say puts lives at risk.“I needed a ride," said Michael Smith, who used and Uber during a recent emergency. "They were the fastest one that came.”Smith says when he experienced a medical emergency, he also called other forms of transportation.“I called Checker cab, Uber, 911 – the first one who came would take me to the hospital and (Uber was) there first,” Smith said.According to Smith, his decision made sense for speed.“I was doing it because I had a medical emergency," he said. "They were there within eight minutes. The guy kept talking to me and stuff. I was going in and out of consciousness. He was keeping me up. They took me to Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit.”Data shows Smith is among a growing crowd of people making the same choice. As mentioned in a recent 961
