SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying and finding a man suspected of intentionally setting a fire in San Diego’s Little Italy area.On July 18, at around 3:45 a.m., a man allegedly lit a recycling dumpster on fire that was against a wall of the Mona Lisa Italian Foods on 2061 India Street.Authorities said the fire spread to the building and a delivery van parked near the dumpster.The blaze caused ,000 in damage.The man suspected in the arson case is white or Hispanic in his mid 20s to early 30s. He appears to be balding, unshaven and has a stocky build.Authorities said the man was shirtless at the time of the incident, but he was wearing skinny jeans and dark-colored loafer-style shoes.The man also has a large vertical tattoo along the right side of his rib cage.Anyone with information on the suspected arsonist or the incident is asked to contact the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) at 619-236-6815 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1110

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol investigators are correcting their initial findings of a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in February.In March, CHP said 35-year-old Justin Callahan was at fault for the fatal collision on the northbound I-5 transition ramp to westbound I-8 on Feb. 26 just before 2 a.m.Investigators had believed Callahan, driving in a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling eastbound in the westbound I-8 lanes when he collided with a Toyota Camry on the transition ramp — a finding Callahan's family had contested.RELATED: Family disputes CHP's details of I-5 wrong-way crashCallahan died at the scene while two female occupants inside the Toyota suffered major injuries.Friday, CHP said they've now concluded the Toyota was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with Callahan's vehicle on the ramp.Investigators also said the driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Lauren Freeman, was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash.Freeman turned herself into San Diego Superior Court Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans presented five renderings of possible suicide barriers for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.More than 400 people have killed themselves by jumping from the bridge since it was opened in 1969, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the nation behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.The possible suicide barriers include a large net underneath the bridge similar to the one to be put on the Golden Gate Bridge, three types of fencing, or 18-inch spikes on top of the existing barriers.Caltrans said one design will be chosen in Spring 2018.They said it will take several years to build the barrier because they need to have environmental impact studies done and get funding for it.  752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City officials hope to get the construction process for a proposed downtown park, aimed at being an anchor for San Diego's East Village, off the ground this summer.The proposed 4.1-acre, million East Village Green will sit between F and G Streets stretching from 13th St. to 15th St. The massive stretch of green space in the heart of downtown San Diego will feature an 11,000-square-foot multi-use lawn, plaza and fountain areas, children's garden, 14,200-square-foot community center, dog parks, and room for food facilities, according to development plans.RELATED: Officials to break ground on county's first bike skills park in South BayThe green would also include an underground parking structure for 200 vehicles. "The City will be maintaining and programming East Village Green, and Civic [San Diego] hopes to start the bid solicitation process in late summer," according to Kimberly Moore with Civic San Diego. Part of the construction process will also involve restoring nearby historic homes, which sit at the corner of F and 15th Streets.
