CHENGDU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Rescue operation and disaster relief for victims in the worst earthquake over decades are of top priority of the nation, and thus require concerted efforts from the whole country, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday night.     Monday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake that ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province and was felt in most parts of the country was the "most destructive" tremor and had the "most wide-spreading impact" since New China was founded in 1949, Wen said on a meeting of the rescue headquarters under the State Council headed by himself. The catastrophe in northern Hebei Province claimed about240,000 lives three decades ago.     He hailed the efficiency and order the country has maintained for the past 80 hours as the country focused its resources on saving lives and disaster relief work for quake victims.     He said the government will stick to its "people-first" policy in its future rescue operations and reconstruction works. BUDAPEST, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, head of China's top political advisory body, on Thursday met with Hungary's parliament speaker and put forward a package of proposals for further expanding friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held talks with Szili Katalin, speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest Thursday morning.     During the meeting, Jia suggested that the two countries should maintain high-level contact so as to deepen political trust. The two countries should also expand trade and economic cooperation in a bid to promote common development. China will continue to encourage well-established companies to invest in Hungary. As a member of the European Union, Hungary is ready to make active contributions to the development of EU-China relations.

Your spirit has touched all Chinese people. I hope you will soon go back to your normal lives and build a better home."     At Dujiangyan Radio and Television Station, Li urged the technicians to repair the network as soon as possible to ensure that the people in the quake zone could enjoy radio and TV programs. Li hoped they could go deep into the front line of the quake and represent the feelings of the victims, soldiers and other relief workers.     "I believe you can create many artworks that will inspire the people affected by the earthquake," Li said.     He was accompanied by Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.     The death toll in the earthquake that jolted Sichuan Province and some other areas on May 12 rose to 69,107 as of Tuesday noon.

Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer also attended the meeting.    Wang said the meeting has secured mutually beneficial win-win results, and would go a long way to promote bilateral cooperation and create a good atmosphere for the next China-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), which will be held later this year.    Like SED, the JCTT is a major cooperation mechanism between the two countries to resolve problems and disputes regarding investment and trade issues through dialogue and discussion, according to Wang.    Echoing Wang's remarks, Gutierrez described Tuesday's meeting as "a very robust session with very robust outcomes."    He said the U.S.-China economic relationship has been the fastest growing one that his country has ever seen.    "The U.S. is today China's No.1 export market, and China the U.S.' No. 3 export market. The relation is growing so fast, so quickly, probably unique in history. And we manage this," said Gutierrez.    He mentioned that the two-way trade volume between the two countries had grown to 380 billion dollars last year from only 4 billion dollars when the JCCT mechanism was initially established in 1983.    During Tuesday's talks, the two sides reached consensus on a wide range of issues, including intellectual property protection, medical equipment acquisition and information security, officials said.    Ahead of this, five bilateral agreements were signed by senior officials from the two sides in areas like agricultural cooperation, food safety, trade statistics and rural information and communications technology development.    The Chinese side also announced to lift bird flu-related ban on poultry products from seven U.S. states including New York, and conditionally resume imports of American beef, while the U.S. side expressed its stance against trade protectionism and promised to push for the lifting of trade barriers against some Chinese products like see food, fruit and woodcraft.    Tuesday's meeting marked the 25th anniversary of the China-U.S. JCCT commission, a high-level government-to-government dialogue seeking to open market opportunities and resolve trade disputes between the two countries.    Wang was leading a big delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and other ministries for the event.

  

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A dozen people were killed and millions were affected as rainstorms continued to lash south China over the past two days, local authorities said on Friday.     Torrential rains also destroyed more than 10,000 houses, disrupted traffic and caused landslides in the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei and Anhui, Guangdong, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     Precipitation exceeded 300 mm in several counties and 250 mm in more than 20 during the last two days in Guangxi and Hunan.     Five people were killed in landslides and house collapses in Guangxi. More than 1.58 million were affected as of Friday morning. Four died after their houses collapsed in the morning while a couple selling fruit were electrocuted, officials said.     The rainstorm cut traffic, delayed airlines and caused landslides in the city neighboring Hong Kong.     The Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters upgraded th fourth-grade emergency response to third-grade as the rainstorm hit the major rivers in the province. The No. 247, No. 248 provincial highways were blocked by landslides. About 30 reservoirs and 28 hydropower stations were damaged. More than 38,000 people were relocated in the city, according to the Lechang city government.     The power authority central Hubei Province announced on Friday an alert situation for local power grid and the Huanglongtan Hydropower Plant against floods. About 4,000 electricians were on stand-by to fix power facilities if affected by the rainstorms.     Storms were expected to hit quake-battered Sichuan Province on Friday night and Saturday morning, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.     Relevant departments were warned of mud-and-rock flows and landslides that could be triggered by strong rains.
