SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who caught herself on fire in her kitchen and her husband were burned when he rushed in to help his wife inside their home in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday, fire officials said.The stove fire inside a home on the 7500 block of Careybrook Lane ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.The husband used whatever he could find in order to help his wife, San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines said."Eventually, there was water used from a bathroom," San Diego police Lt. Mike Ramsay told the station. "But due to whatever was used (by the husband) part of the flash, part of the fire, his clothing caught on fire."The husband and wife were taken to the UCSD hospital burn center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person died today in a traffic collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV near Escondido.The crash happened at 4 p.m. Saturday on Birch Avenue and Bear Valley Parkway in an unincorporated area outside Escondido, the California Highway Patrol said.An Acura MDX SUV and a motorcycle collided, killing one person, the CHP said. It was not immediately known whether the victim was on the motorcycle or in the SUV.The accident forced the closure of northbound Bear Valley at Idaho Avenue. Traffic on southbound Bear Valley was being diverted to Birch, the CHP said. 589

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call Monday for any additional alleged victims of a 35-year-old man accused of running a loan sharking scheme primarily targeting Latinos in San Diego County.FBI agents and Escondido police detectives arrested Hamze Mohamad Karnib, who goes by Alex Karnib, Thursday at his San Marcos home on suspicion of extortion and making criminal threats, FBI spokeswoman Davene Butler said.Karnib allegedly targeted Latinos and demanded repayment well above the amounts borrowed by his victims, Butler said. He then allegedly intimidated and threatened borrowers who couldn't meet his demands.He was being held in lieu of ,000 pending arraignment, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8, according to jail records."Threatening and criminal behavior that targets the Latino or any other members of our community will not be tolerated," San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage suspect was behind bars today in connection with the 7-month-old slaying of another young man in a Southcrest- area neighborhood.Raheem Malik Meals, 18, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering 20-year-old Ismail Abouabid on Jan. 15, according to San Diego police.Patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident in the 4000 block of Boston Avenue shortly before noon that day found Abouabid mortally wounded behind the wheel of a parked vehicle, bleeding from the head, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Abouabid, who had recently relocated to San Diego from Erie, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.Witnesses told investigators three male teenagers had been with the victim just prior to his death and walked off toward a nearby park just before he was found.Police initially reported that Abouabid had been shot to death but later backed off from those statements.``The mechanism for the (victim's) injury is not being released at this time,'' Dobbs said Tuesday.The lieutenant also declined to disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying or reveal what led investigators to identify Meals as a suspect in the case. 1186

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798
