WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Monday that President Donald Trump gave him a direct order to allow a Navy SEAL accused of war crimes to retire without losing his SEAL status.Esper told reporters at the Pentagon that Trump’s order was the reason he announced Sunday that Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher would be allowed to retire with his Trident Pin, retaining his status as a SEAL.Last week Trump had tweeted that he wanted Gallagher to be allowed to retire as a SEAL, but Esper’s comments Monday revealed that Trump had given the defense secretary a direct order to make this happen.Gallagher was acquitted of murder in the stabbing death of an Islamic State militant captive but convicted of posing with the corpse while in Iraq in 2017.In his remarks, Esper also made the extraordinary accusation that Navy Secretary Richard Spencer last week had secretly offered to the White House to rig the Navy disciplinary process to ensure that Gallagher not lose his Trident. WARNING: This story contains content that is graphic in nature.LAND O' LAKES, Fla. -- A Pasco County, Florida deputy has been fired after he was arrested for touching a woman against her will and placing semen on her. Joseph Mercado, 25, has been charged with battery. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has confirmed Mercado was terminated after he was arrested on February 28. Mercado and the victim were "NOT involved in an ongoing dating relationship at the time of this incident," according to the arrest affidavit.On February 15, 2018, while Mercado was off-duty, he arrived at the victim's home and told the victim they needed to discuss a "serious incident" that he witnessed. The victim met Mercado outside in the driveway and repeatedly asked him to leave. According to arrest documents, Mercado masturbated in front of the woman. She repeatedly told him to leave. Mercado then used his finger to place semen on the victim's breast, above the neckline of her shirt and then attempted to place it on the victim's lips, prior to her pulling away, according to the arrest affidavit. The victim continued to ask Mercado to leave and she went into her home until he left the property.Mercado was arrested on February 28th without incident.The Sheriff released a statement about the incident: "The Pasco Sheriff's Office ensures discipline is paramount in our organization. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were arrested this week after a pursuit took authorities from Valley Center into unincorporated Escondido.San Diego Sheriff's Department says the pursuit began just after 9 p.m. near State route 76 near Pala Mission Rd. after a deputy spotted a stolen truck. When the deputy tried to pull the truck over, the deputy says the drier sped off.The chase reached speeds of 90 miles per hour and lasted about 30 minutes, with deputies from Fallbrook and San Marcos assisting in the chase.A spike strip was used and put an end to the chase near the Mountain Meadows community of unincorporated Escondido, the department said.After hitting the curb, the driver put the truck in reverse and rammed into a Sheriff's patrol car, deputies say.No deputies were hurt.The female driver and male passenger of the truck, identified as Sally Arrellanes and Roy James Duncan, were arrested and charged with felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon likely to result in great bodily injury, vehicle theft, conspiracy to commit crime and possession of a stolen vehicle. 1093
