SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California fire authorities say Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power lines sparked the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history.Cal Fire said Wednesday the lines in the Pulga area ignited the Nov. 8 fire that killed 85 people in Paradise.The investigation also identified a second nearby ignition site involving vegetation and electrical distribution lines, also owned and operated by the San Francisco-based utility.The second fire was quickly consumed by the initial fire.Lynsey Paulo, a spokeswoman for PG&E, did not immediately comment.The fire in Butte County destroyed nearly 15,000 homes.The nation's largest utility filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January as it faced tens of billions of dollars in potential liability costs related to wildfires in 2017 and 2018. 823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Ocean Beach could be getting a new Target, but only if the big box store figures out a way to get around a decades-old parking issue with the city. News of a possible Target Express store moving into the old Antique Center building had some residents like Zeb Ryan shaking his head. “Why do we need more corporate businesses here?” Ryan said. He pointed at the nearby CVS, saying everything he would get at a new Target Express is already around the corner. Other residents agreed, saying it’s a battle of the C’s — comfort vs. convenience.“I don’t know if you’re getting any comfort from a Target,” OB resident, Drew Sibley said. “You’re getting convenience. But not character. Against the advice of the judge, 49-year-old Juan Carlos Herrera told the courtroom, he will fight this alone. "I would like to represent myself," Herrera said. Relinquishing rights to counsel, the San Diego High school special needs teacher read the 20 felonies for the first time inside the defendant's box. Those charges include having sex, performing other sex acts, and physically and emotionally abusing one student between February 2018 and this March, when she was 15 and 16 years old."They occurred on an almost daily basis," Deputy District Attorney, Jessica Coto said. "They took place in hotels, in his car, and in his classroom." Coto said his ongoing manipulation extended to making threats."The defendant also routinely threatened the victim, that if she told anybody about what was happening, that she would cut off her arms and legs," Coto said. This all came to light on May 5, 2019, when police arrested Herrera at the US-Mexico border. Days prior, the girl's mother found inappropriate messages from Herrera on her daughter's phone.Because of the nature of the charges, and Herrera's second home in Mexico, the prosecution requested million bail. As his own attorney, Herrera fought back, saying he is a Navy veteran with a 25-year clean record with the district."It's not conceivable for someone with my earnings to make million, nor would I flee," Herrera pleaded.
