SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--If you've ever seen a traditional Danza Azteca performance, you know it's much more than a show."We always explain to people that these are ceremonial prayers and that we're sharing them not to entertain people although that's part of it because people love seeing it but also to teach the history of the dancing and to teach there's something to learn from everybody," said Mario Aguilar, the Capitan General or leader of Danza Mexi'cayotl.The group is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year, which makes it the longest running of it's kind in the country.Aguilar says the dancing is just a part of what they offer members."We use the name circle because we consider ourselves, everybody in the circle as family members, we have some people who've been dancing 40 years," he explained.The colorful and elaborate dances are really stories, telling of the ancient indigenous heritage that members are keeping alive.Aguilar says they're also trying to spread a message of unity."We're reminding people that we're all one people we dress differently we talk differently but we all come and go from the same place and that to me is the greatest gift of Azteca Dance." 1194

SAN DIEGO,Calif. (KGTV) -- A North San Diego County mother died early Sunday morning and the father of her children has been arrested, authorities said.San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to calls of a possible shooting just after midnight at a home on 25969 Duro Rd. in Valley Center, according to Lt. Chad Boudreau of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.When deputies arrived, they found an adult female suffering from a traumatic injury. The victim was rushed to Palomar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, said Boudreau.The victim was identified as Mayra Meraz, 31. Her injuries were not made available at this time.The suspect, Anthony Daniel Chaloux, 42, was arrested and booked into jail for murder.According to Boudreau, the suspect and the victim were in a domestic relationship and have two children together.Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330/after hours at (858) 565-5200. SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? Then they say, that's too many," said Rodriguez. Tuesday the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to set up a million dollar trust fund for the county to use to invest in affordable housing. The vote followed a brief presentation by staff detailing the housing-related hurdles in the San Diego region, including that more than 3,500 affordable units have been lost in the last 20 years.Staff said there are now more than 9,000 homeless people on any given night, a 5 percent 1309

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) — It was a struggle that paved the way for American women today, giving those forced to be silent, a voice: the right to vote."It took 72 years from 1848 until 1920 to get the 19th Amendment added to our constitution," said Anne Hoiberg, Board President of the Women's Museum of California. She refuses to forget what it took to get here and the women who fought not only for the right to vote, but for equality."Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony they were really the team," she said while pointing to photos that line an exhibit inside of the museum at Liberty Station. "Carrie Chapman Catt started the League of Women Voters.""We have to credit Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott two Quakers, two abolitionist, who were determined that women needed to have the right to vote, but they also needed other rights," said Hoiberg. "They needed the right to divorce, to go to college, to become professionals like a doctor or a lawyer."Because of those women and many more, the protests, marches, arrests and tireless work, women here in San Diego heading to the polls know their votes count. Their opinions matter. Their voices are heard."That means a lot to me," said voter Linda Garcia. "It's terrible that it took so long to even happen.""We have rights and we should take advantage of those rights," said Diana Romero, another women who always votes. San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - California is the biggest prizes in the 2020 primary and the remaining Democratic presidential candidates are making a final push to turn out voters in San Diego. Much of their final efforts is focused on getting supporters in the South Bay."We're putting people out in their own neighborhoods, talking to neighbors they already know, making sure they're filling out their absentee ballots," said Joe Biden campaign staffer Jack Hurley.Biden opened an office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista shortly after the Iowa Caucus. While Biden does not have as big a staff or infrastructure as other campaigns, they have seen a boost in volunteers since Biden won the South Carolina primary. "I want to see change and I wanted Joe Biden to be that change, and that means I needed to get to work," said Russell, who walked in to the Biden office Monday to volunteer.Bernie Sanders has a large organization in San Diego, based out of its headquarters in Barrio Logan. Monday, teams worked in shifts to train volunteers to canvass the South Bay, focused particularly on San Ysidro. "Our goal is turning out voters that a lot of them haven't actually voted before. So we're mainly focused on turnout at this point in time," one staffmember told the volunteers."It was tough in the beginning," said Sanders volunteer France Hanna about his first efforts at doorknocking. "But I realize as I share my personal Bernie story with all the doors that I knock on that I have a lot of commonalities with people."The Sanders campaign is particularly working to utilize a relatively new law in California that allows ballot delivery, meaning that campaign volunteers can pick up voters' ballots and deliver them to be counted. Because Sanders emphasizes turnout out non-traditional voters, especially young voters and people of color, ballot delivery could provide a boon, making it easier people who perhaps may not have gone to the polls to cast a ballot.The Mike Bloomberg campaign is also working to reach LatinX voters in the South Bay. "One of the main things we understand about the South Bay is that there is the most potential to turn out voters," said staffer Jesus Cardenas. Bloomberg has teams of volunteers knocking on doors and making calls. "It's going to be a little bit crazy, but it's going to be fun," Cardenas said.
