A recent study by researchers at Columbia University in New York found that mothers who give birth and are infected with COVID-19 might not need to be separated from their newborns.The observational study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Pediatrics on Monday, found no evidence of transmission from the 101 newborns (including a set of twins) born to a 100 mothers, who had or suspected of having the coronavirus, despite the babies rooming or breastfed directly.The researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center said 91 moms chose to breastfeed, and 76 stayed in the same room with their baby. If they breastfed, the moms wore a mask and practiced breast and hand hygiene. The moms who roomed-in with their newborns, who were in isolettes, were distanced about 6 feet away from the mother's bed.The study showed 99 women tested positive and one tested negative, but presented signs consistent with COVID-19, so she was treated as a presumptive positive.Researchers said 55 babies were seen again two weeks after their birth, and they all remained healthy."Our findings suggest that mothers positive for SARS-CoV-2, including those with clinical symptoms, and their newborns may not need to be separated," the researchers said. 1268

A Pennsylvania couple is facing criminal charges after police say they hid the body of their infant daughter in a plastic container filled with cat litter in a crawlspace inside their home, according to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office.Samantha Trump, 27, and Shaun Oxenreider, 25, are charged with abuse of a corpse, concealing the whereabouts of a child and criminal conspiracy, according to a criminal complaint.Spring Township police began an investigation when two relatives of Oxenreider contacted them, reporting that they’d heard about the death of the 6-month old baby, the criminal complaint says.Officials are still trying to determine how and when the child died. An autopsy has been scheduled.Police say a relative of Oxenreider told them he’d heard several stories about what happened to the baby and who paid for the funeral expenses from Oxenreider, according to the criminal complaint.Police spoke to a Berks County Children and Youth Services caseworker to follow up with the report, the criminal complaint says. The caseworker spoke to Oxenreider and Trump on the phone, then told police their statements were suspicious. The caseworker also told police she could find no record of the baby’s name with either Trump or Oxenreider as a last name at any Berks-area hospital, or at the funeral home where the couple said they had the baby’s remains cremated.When asked to provide a death certificate for the child, Trump told the caseworker that she and Oxenreider were in New Jersey visiting a relative, and would not be back until after Easter, according to the criminal complaint.On Monday night, the criminal complaint says, a relative drove past the couple’s home on the 1300 block of West Wyomissing Court and saw Oxenreider’s vehicle parked outside. The relative contacted police, who went to the home to investigate.The couple initially did not allow police inside, the criminal complaint says. Officers spoke to Trump through the door while Oxenreider attended to the couple’s other child.As the investigating officer and child protective services officials arrived on the scene, Oxenreider left the home, and Trump remained at the door, the criminal complaint says. Trump then dropped to the ground and went into convulsions during questioning by investigators. She was taken to Reading Hospital for treatment, according to the criminal complaint.Police continued to speak to Oxenreider. Shortly after midnight, they asked his permission to search the home, the criminal complaint says. Officers made it clear that they wanted to look in spaces that could potentially conceal a child.Oxenreider agreed to the search.Police eventually searched a locked bathroom, that Oxenreider opened with a key. Inside they discovered used diapers, pictures of the baby, and baby clothing. A door inside the bathroom leading to a crawl space was also found. When police looked inside, they found a large plastic container with the lid snapped shut, the criminal complaint says. The container was filled with cat litter.Officers noticed a plastic trash bag sticking out of the litter. When the bag was pulled out and cut open, the criminal complaint says, police discovered the child’s body inside.Oxenreider was arrested without incident, according to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office. A postal worker's union says that USPS employees were not involved in an incident that led to several unopened mail bags dumped in two separate locations in Glendale, California, last week.On Thursday, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles obtained surveillance footage that showed a Budget rental truck pulling into the parking lot of Glendale spa.That morning, at about 5:40 a.m. local time, the truck pulled into the parking lot of 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics and began pulling bags of unopened mail and packages out of the truck. The truck later pulled away, leaving the mail behind.About two hours after the truck initially pulled up at 7Q, the Glendale Police Department received a call about a second large pile of mail that was found in an alley about a half a mile away.It's unclear if the two instances are related. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that the Glendale Police Department had opened investigations into the incidents.On Tuesday, Omar Gonzalez, the Western Regional Coordinator for the American Postal Workers Union, told CNN that the person caught on surveillance footage dumping mail was a "contractor," and not a USPS employee.It's unclear how the mail made it on to a Budget rental truck. Mail coming into the Glendale post office is supposed to arrive on USPS trucks."If it's outgoing, we don't know how it got into the Budget truck," Gonzalez told CNN.CNN also confirmed Tuesday that the Postal Inspector's Office had opened an investigation. The mail recovered from the scene will "go through a verification process and be delivered."The mail dumping incidents come amid scrutiny of the USPS following the appointment of Louis DeJoy as postmaster general. Since President Donald Trump appointed him to take over the USPS in June, postal employees say that DeJoy — a longtime Republican donor and Trump supporter — has attempted to institute policy changes that have led to significant mail delivery delays.The delays have sparked concern that the agency won't be able to handle increased mail-in voting during the upcoming general election.Last month, DeJoy said the USPS would hold off on implementing further changes ahead of the 2020 election but has said he will not restore previous policies or bring back mail sorting equipment that has already been taken off-line.Democrats in the House of Representatives announced Tuesday that they were opening an investigation into allegations of campaign finance violations against DeJoy. 2462

A van covered in conservative political bumper stickers parked nearby where a suspect was arrested in connection with a series of package bombs sent to liberal politicians and donors was taken into police custody Friday.The van was plastered with large stickers in support of President Trump. It also included a sticker of Hillary Clinton in a sniper's crosshairs and a "CNN Sucks!" sticker.Police covered the van in a tarp and drove it to a nearby facility.It's unclear if the van belongs to Cesar Sayoc, the man arrested in connection with the package bombs, though it was located in a parking lot of the same auto parts store in which Sayoc was arrested.At least 12 package bombs were sent to liberal politicians and donors this week.
