A new Congress is about to be sworn in. Democrats are taking over the House, and Republicans are adding to their majority in the Senate. They've already got a lot on their plate. Now that Democrats have the House, many won't feel the need to give into the president's demands. House Democrats are also planning to move quickly to take up gun reform. They plan to advance several bills within the first 100 days. Most notably, Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson plans to introduce a bipartisan bill mandating universal background checks on all gun sales. Some GOP House members have already voiced support. Still, the Republican Senate likely won't pass any high-profile gun control bills. But given the shootings in Pittsburgh, Parkland, Santa Fe and Thousand Oaks in 2018, Democrats feel public momentum is on their side. Health care may be a place to find some common ground in 2019. Democrats and Republicans have said they're interested in looking at prescription drug prices. That's probably where the harmony will end. Republicans still want to gut the Affordable Care Act as Democrats look to bolster it. Of course, there will be many investigations. Democrats will be looking into Russia, the Trump family and its finances, potential conflicts of interest, James Comey's firing and the dealings of many of Trump's associates, just to name a few.There's lots to do in this new Congress, but with a divided government, there may not be room for each party to accomplish its goals. 2195

Often, what looks like a free offer has fine print that results in a consumer getting unwanted products which are charged to your debit or credit cards.The internet and social media are filled with "free trial" offers promising you a chance to get a free product for a small shipping charge.However, the BBB found that many times people are not reading the fine print, which can be misleading and says a person is actually subscribing to receive products over time.Some New York victims have lost hundreds of dollars. And the problem is growing. The Federal Trade Commission reported the number of "free trial" complaints nearly doubling from 2015 to 2017.An investigation by the Better Business Bureau found that 72 percent of victims are women because the fraudulent ads often promote skin care products.In addition, the BBB found scammers are falsely claiming celebrities, like Oprah Winfrey and others, are endorsing their products.You can read the BBB investigation 1123

A police department in Texas has apologized to a man after two mounted police officers leashed him to their horses during an arrest.The photos, taken by bystanders in Galveston, Texas, prompted outrage and accusations of racism against the police department.According to the Galveston Police, 43-year-old Donald Neely was arrested for criminal trespassing on Saturday. During his arrested, two officers — identified only as P. Brosch and A. Smith — clipped a rope to his handcuffs, which was being held by one of the officers.The officers' body cameras were activated at the time.
