BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun, Friday urged the Chinese automobile industry to enhance indigenous technology and foster domestic brands while visiting an auto technology show here.At the China Achievements Expo for Self-innovated Auto Technology and Products, Li Changchun said boosting innovative capacity was pivotal to economic restructuring and shifting the economic growth pattern.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said respect for innovation and talent should be the norm.The auto show, which runs from Thursday to Monday, features more than 140 cars from 16 Chinese companies. BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, has asked its branches to effectively implement a moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of the year.The bank urged maintaining the continuity and stability of monetary policies while making them more targeted and flexible, according to a statement on the bank's website after a meeting with branch presidents.It also urged adhering to the policy of striking a balance between keeping stable and relatively fast economic growth, adjusting the economic structure and managing inflation expectations.It asked its branches to stick to its annual lending target while maintaining market liquidity at a reasonable level.Housing loan policies should be strictly implemented to ensure the stable and healthy development of China's real estate market, the statement said.h China's monetary policy should be more proactive, targeted and effective, the statement added.The central bank has set a target to keep the country's new bank lending to below 7.5-trillion-yuan (1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2010.In the first half of the year, China's new yuan-denominated lending hit 4.63 trillion yuan, down 2.74 trillion yuan from the same period last year.

GUANLING, Guizhou, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a rain-triggered landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province had risen to 13 after rescuers recovered another two bodies Thursday night, rescue headquarters said.Some 2,000 people continued the rescue operation, but the chance of survival for the other 86 villagers was slim after being buried under mud for three days, rescuers said.More bodies are expected to be found as rescuers comb the ruins."It is almost impossible for any of the trapped to be alive now. We are doing our utmost to retrieve the bodies. Today the priority has shifted to retrieving bodies," said rescuer Fan Wenjian.The landslide lasted for two minutes, and there was no warning.It would have been very difficult for the villagers to escape, said an official with the Guizhou Provincial Work Safety Bureau."The sound was much like thunder. When I looked back, the whole village had disappeared," said survivor Zhang Jin.The landslide consisted of about 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of mud, and it was unstable and likely to trigger additional landslides, said Yin Yueping, a researcher with the Ministry of Land and Resources.At least 1,000 villagers living in the area have been evacuated.Torrential rains have been ravaging south China over the past two months. A once-in-three-century rainstorm was seen in Lingyun County of Guizhou's neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from Sunday to Tuesday, and residents have to go outdoors by boat."It will take more than 10 days for the flood to wane because of the geological structure here," said Zhou Lixin, secretary of Lingyun's Luolou Town Committee of the Communist Party of China.Heavy rainstorms also hit east China's Shandong Province and northwest China's Qinghai Province. Flood water blocked the rail transport in Shandong for two hours, affecting 22 trains, Thursday.Local meteorological bureaus said heavy rains would continue to pound Shandong and some area of Qinghai Province.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said.The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier.The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices.As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

JILIN, Jilin Province, July 29 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 barrels filled with chemicals have been swept into a major river in northeast China's Jilin Province, thousands more than originally thought, authorities said Thursday.Another 4,000 empty barrels have also entered the river, officials said at a press conference Thursday morning.On Wednesday, authorities said around 1,000 barrels had entered the Songhuajiang River in Jilin City.Barrels were spotted in the river Wednesday, but it is not known when they entered the waterway.The barrels first entered the Wende River and then flowed into the Songhuajiang River, after floods hit the storage facilities of two chemical factories -- Jilin Xinyaqiang Biochem Co. Ltd. and Jilin Zhongxin Group.Each chemical-filled barrel contains about 170 kilograms of chemicals.Of the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels, about 2,500 barrels contain trimethyl chloro silicane -- a colorless flammable liquid with a pungent odor -- while 500 contain hexamethyl disilazane -- a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.Officials said emergency workers and soldiers are rushing to retrieve the barrels. Workers are collecting the barrels at eight points on the river. About 400 have been recovered so far.Seven stations have been established to monitor water contamination.
