SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local, independently owned grocery stores are keeping an eye on a potential grocery worker strike in Southern California. On Monday, UFCW Local 135 will vote to authorize strikes at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs. Union representatives say employees have been working without a contract since March. Union president, Todd Walters, says they've met 17 times with the companies asking for better wages, health benefits and pensions. In South Park, the owner of a small grocery store says he hopes the bigger retailers don't enter a strike. David Halabo owns Food Bowl Market with his wife. During the last strike in 2003, Halabo says his business saw an increase in customers for specific items like bread, milk and eggs. Halabo says he's keeping an eye on the negotiations, but says he'll only stock up on extra items if the workers do go on strike. The small business owner says, although is business would benefit, he doesn't want to see a strike happen.Ralphs spokesperson John Votava sent 10News a statement from the company, saying:"We are negotiating in good faith with the union for a fair and balanced contract that is good for our associates, as well as our company. As you know, negotiations are about finding compromise, and this can take time. Throughout the negotiations, it's business as usual in our stores and Ralphs is extremely proud of our associates who remain focused on serving our customers, communities and each other."Vons/Albertson's spokesperson Melissa Hill sent this statement as well, saying:"We are committed to working collaboratively with the unions to ensure that we reach an agreement that is fair to our employees, good for our customers and allows Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions to remain competitive in the Southern California market. We feel the strike authorization vote is premature and will cause our employees and customers undue concern; nevertheless, we will be back at the bargaining table on July 10 and hope to reach an agreement soon."The vote doesn't mean employees will go on strike immediately, but it does give the union the ability to call for one at any time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like most people who’ve worked decades towards retirement, Danielle Schulte has some ideas on how she’ll spend it."Initially I’m going to sleep in late, read the newspaper, yes, I still read paper!”Schulte is an Employee Relation Specialist for UC San Diego and hopes to retire in about six years.While she's been saving since graduating college, Schulte wishes she'd saved more, especially watching the market plunge in recent days.“Because I am getting close to retirement, I don’t have as much comfort in giving it time to even out,” said Schulte.She hired a financial advisor 13 years ago and continues to fine-tune her plan, currently looking into annuities."He has been really good in helping me not to panic, helping me invest my money in stable securities as best you can, given the market," said Schulte.Dennis Brewster is a financial advisor for SagePoint Financial. He too says it's not the time to panic.“Right now we’re down about 10 percent, that’s normal, it’s just that we haven’t had anything for so long, I think that's what makes it a little tougher, we haven’t had any declines," said Brewster. "We’ve been spoiled a little bit the last few years, on average [the decline] is usually 14 percent a year.”However, Brewster says those looking to retire soon need to pay attention and plan ahead with their 401(k)."The last thing you want to do is get too aggressive going into retirement, so somebody getting closer to retirement should be concerned, they don't want to get too extreme but do want to be a little more careful because you don't have 30 years to make it up."Schulte remains confident in the groundwork she’s laid on her retirement plan and is hopeful she can turn off the alarm clock for good in six years.  1772

The park will host special "Lego Movie" festivities from Feb. 16 - 17 and 23 - 24 around the park ahead of the attraction's opening.The park's resort is also getting a special zone geared toward toddlers modeled after Duplo. The play town will add an express train in the park and kids will be able to ride, slide, and hide in the interactive area.Also being added is a "Lego 4D-Officer in Pursuit" film that will play at the park's theater and new live character shows at the Miniland Stage.It's not exactly clear when the new additions would be opened to guests in 2019. 1458
