WASHINGTON (AP) — Their hopes fading for Senate control, Democrats had a disappointing election night as Republicans swatted down an onslaught of challengers and fought to retain their majority.Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper defeated incumbent Sen. Cory Gardner, while ex-college football coach Tommy Tuberville won back Alabama’s Senate seat for the GOP, defeating Sen. Doug Jones.Later in the evening, Mark Kelly, a NASA astronaut, and husband to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords defeated Sen. Martha McSally.Republicans also held their own in high-profile races in South Carolina, Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and Montana, narrowing the political map.Respectively, Sen. Lindsey Graham won against Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison, Sen. John Cornyn defeated Mary Hegar, Roger Marshall won against Barbara Bollier, Sen. Joni Ernst defeated Theresa Greenfield, and Sen. Steve Daines beat Gov. Steve Bullock. It was a jarring outcome for Democrats who had devised an expanded political map, eager to provide a backstop against President Donald Trump and his party’s grip on the Senate. The races attracted an unprecedented outpouring of small-dollar donations from Americans apparently voting with their pocketbooks to propel long-shot campaigns.Democrats did retain their Senate seats in Oregon, New Mexico, Minnesota, Illinois, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Virginia. Both parties saw paths to victory, but options are becoming more limited. As of about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, there were still some Senate races to be called. Races in these states still hadn’t been called by The Associated Press: Michigan, Maine, North Carolina, Alaska, and Georgia. The outcomes might not be known until the days to come. And in Georgia's special election, Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Raphael Warnock have advanced to a Jan. 5 runoff for Loeffler’s Senate seat. They’re the top two finishers in a crowded field that also included Republican Rep. Doug Collins. But no candidate was able to get the 50% threshold needed in order to win outright.Loeffler, a wealthy businesswoman, was appointed last year to replace retiring Sen. Johnny Isakson. Warnock is pastor of the Atlanta church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached. He’s trying to become Georgia’s first Black U.S. senator. The voters’ choices will force a rethinking of Democratic Party strategy, messaging, and approach from the Trump era. 2444

Washington, DC, police have identified a man who shot himself in the head in front of the White House at just before noon Saturday as 26-year-old Cameron Ross Burgess of Maylene, Alabama."At approximately 11:46 am, Burgess approached the vicinity of the North White House fence line and removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear at this time to have been directed towards the White House," the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Sunday.A law enforcement source told CNN the shooter shot his phone before shooting himself. No suicide note was found, but incoherent sentences were found in a book recovered on the scene, the source said. The man died from his injuries; no one else was hurt in the incident, a Secret Service spokesperson said. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.Burgess' remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the police department said.President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, at the time and were scheduled to return to Washington on Saturday afternoon for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner."We are aware of the incident," deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said after the shooting. "The President has been briefed. I refer you to the Secret Service for any more information."The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. The Secret Service said Saturday that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House was affected by the incident.Law enforcement personnel spent about four hours Saturday afternoon searching a maroon Honda Accord with an Alabama license plate parked on the street near the Capital Hilton hotel, a few blocks from the White House. After officers blocked off the area, a bomb squad swept the car, and law enforcement personnel removed several items from it, including what looked like pictures and documents from a cigar box, before towing the car away. A Secret Service source confirmed to CNN that the victim's car was located in the area where the search of the vehicle took place. 2264

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday, alleging the tech company has been abusing its dominance in online search to stifle competition and harm consumers. In the lawsuit filed by the DOJ and attorneys general from 11 conservative-leaning states, officials say Google has accounted for nearly 90% of all search queries in the U.S. and has used anticompetitive tactics to extend its monopolies in search and search advertising.Specifically, the complaint claims Google unlawfully maintained monopolies by doing the following:Entering into exclusivity agreements that forbid preinstallation of any competing search serviceEntering into tying and other arrangements that force preinstallation of its search applications in prime locations on mobile devices and make them undeletable, regardless of consumer preferenceEntering into long-term agreements with Apple that require Google to be the default – and de facto exclusive – general search engine on Apple’s popular Safari browser and other Apple search toolsGenerally using monopoly profits to buy preferential treatment for its search engine on devices, web browsers, and other search access points, creating a continuous and self-reinforcing cycle of monopolizationGoogle has long denied the claims of unfair competition. The company argues that although its businesses are large, they are useful and beneficial to consumers.“Today, millions of Americans rely on the Internet and online platforms for their daily lives. Competition in this industry is vitally important, which is why today’s challenge against Google — the gatekeeper of the Internet — for violating antitrust laws is a monumental case both for the Department of Justice and for the American people,” said Attorney General William Barr. “Since my confirmation, I have prioritized the Department’s review of online market-leading platforms to ensure that our technology industries remain competitive. This lawsuit strikes at the heart of Google’s grip over the internet for millions of American consumers, advertisers, small businesses and entrepreneurs beholden to an unlawful monopolist.”The litigation marks the government’s most significant act to protect competition since its groundbreaking case against Microsoft more than 20 years ago.“As with its historic antitrust actions against AT&T in 1974 and Microsoft in 1998, the Department is again enforcing the Sherman Act to restore the role of competition and open the door to the next wave of innovation—this time in vital digital markets,” said Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen. The suit could be an opening salvo ahead of other major government antitrust actions, given ongoing investigations of major tech companies including Apple, Amazon and Facebook at both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission. The nation’s antitrust laws are in place to regulate the conduct and organization of corporations. They’re generally meant to keep the market free, open and competitive to benefit consumers. The DOJ says these antitrust laws empower the department to bring cases like this one to remedy violations and restore competition, as it has done for over a century in notable cases involving companies like Standard Oil and the AT&T telephone company. 3315

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has approved a bill that would make the District of Columbia the 51st state, but the legislation faces strong opposition from Republicans. The House vote was prompted by the White House's move to use federal forces to clear peaceful protesters so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op earlier this month.D.C. statehood is an issue that advocates say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.Democratic lawmakers say Congress has both the moral obligation and constitutional authority to ensure that the city’s 700,000 residents are allowed full voting rights, no longer subject to "taxation without representation."Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the district’s non-voting representative in Congress, sponsored the bill, saying it has both the facts and Constitution on its side.D.C.'s population is larger than those of Wyoming and Vermont, and its budget is larger than 12 states.Action on the bill in the GOP-controlled Senate is unlikely. If the measure was signed into law, the state of “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” would be admitted into the U.S. and the new state would elect two U.S. senators and one U.S. representative. The seats would likely go to the Democrats, due to the community’s largely liberal population. The state would consist of all D.C. territory except federal buildings and monuments, including the principal federal monuments, the White House, the Capitol Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and the federal executive, legislative, and judicial office buildings located adjacent to the Mall and the Capitol Building. 1716

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump committed to a second stimulus package Monday in a wide-ranging interview with The E.W. Scripps Company. When asked by Washington Correspondent Joe St. George if he plans on getting Americans a second stimulus check, the president said yes."We will be doing another stimulus package, it will be very good, very generous," President Trump said. When asked how much money people will receive with the next stimulus bill, Trump said, "You'll find out about it."Trump said his administration will probably announce the next package over the next couple of weeks. He added that he thinks the legislation will be bipartisan. 666
