CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay teen was recently published in The New York Times, sharing a very personal account of what distance learning is like for him during the pandemic. Isaac Lozano is a senior at Bonita Vista High School, a school in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Lozano praises the district for starting the school year virtually because of COVID-19. Lozano told ABC 10News that sharing his reality wasn’t easy, but he now feels proud that he can be a voice for other students like him.The op-ed titled “Remote Learning Is Hard. Losing Family Members is Worse" was published on Aug. 13.In the article Lozano, a straight-A student, details his struggles with distance learning at home. He lives in a two-bedroom apartment, shares a room with his two brothers, and both parents are essential workers. Lozano also lives in the South Bay, one of the areas most impacted by COVID-19 in San Diego County.Lozano writes about not having a designated place to study, moving from room to room in his family’s apartment. He also highlights internet connectivity issues, but insists he has concerns about going back to school before it is safe to do so.Lozano gets personal in the article, sharing that COVID-19 hits close to home. His uncle died of the virus.Since the article was published, Lozano says he’s heard from people offering to help. He’s also heard from a publishing company, a literary magazine and even received an internship offer from a congressional candidate.Lozano will be applying to colleges in the fall and is interested in applying to Stanford, Yale, and UCLA. CHICAGO, Ill. – The shopping frenzy at the outset of the pandemic gave many Americans their first taste of what it’s like to not have access to basic necessities. But it’s a reality that communities of color have faced for decades.A chance errand to Chicago’s west side taught entrepreneur Liz Abunaw that access to groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables was a luxury.“I'm on a commercial corridor in a Black neighborhood and none of this stuff is readily available and it didn't sit right with me,” said Abunaw.The New York native and business school graduate decided to do something about it. She started a social enterprise to bring fresh produce to the neighborhood.“When I was thinking of a name for this business, I wanted something that was distinctly rooted in Black culture,” said Abunaw.Forty Acres Fresh Market is a reference to Special Field Orders No. 15. Issued by General William T. Sherman in 1865, it promised 40 acres of land and mules for freed slaves to settle land in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It was revoked months later by President Andrew Johnson.“It's a cruel irony that the descendants of this country's first farmers now live in neighborhoods where they can get nothing from the earth,” she said.While more than 23 million Americans live in so-called "food deserts," researchers say food inequity disproportionately affects communities of color.“What I see is this unequal food system in this country,” said Abunaw. “I started calling it by what it is. It's food apartheid.”Originally, Abunaw started with pop-up markets and a plan to go brick and mortar. But the pandemic shifted operations. Home deliveries have more than tripled.“One thing the pandemic did was it made everybody realize what it could be like to live with food insecurity even if you're more affluent,” said Abunaw.Each day, warehouse supervisor Tracy Smith goes through the online orders, selecting and hand packing fruits and vegetables for what they call a "mix-it-up bag."“I just went through the line and picked what I thought went together,” said Smith.A recipe card helps consumers decide how to cook the fresh produce.For now, Abunaw is focused on continuing to scale up as she chips away at food inequity, one neighborhood at a time.“The consumers here deserve goods and services that are of high quality. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Police showed off a new drone on Tuesday called the Skydio 2.The drone is designed to be easy to pilot, using cameras and sensors on all sides to detect objects before crashing into them.It also has the ability to track a person on auto-pilot.CVPD is the first law enforcement agency in the world to obtain the new drone.It joins their fleet of several other drones that have already been used in 1144 incidents and have led to 158 arrests. 489
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police have made an arrest after the body of a man was discovered in a bank parking lot late Wednesday.Chula Vista Police said 37-year-old Angel Padilla was arrested shortly before 12 p.m. on Thursday in the 300 block of Third Avenue.Police said a suspect matching Padilla's description was seen on security footage with a hatchet-type weapon near where the victim was found.The victim was discovered just before 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday behind the Bank of America located at 295 E Street. (KGTV) -- Hundreds of thousands of veterans and active duty military call San Diego County home, but a group says they are facing big disadvantages when trying to buy a house here.The San Diego Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals says more than 60 percent of listings in the county won't accept offers with V.A. loans.The federally backed loans don't require a down payment or mortgage insurance. Those eligible in San Diego County can borrow up to about 0,000 without any cash down. "We have served, and the V.A. loan is a guaranteed loan," said Andre Hobbs, a San Diego realtor and veteran who heads the association.Hobbs says the benefit is backfiring for some home seekers in San Diego's ultra-competitive housing market. It's because he says sellers are opting for offers instead that include cash down payment because of a misperception about V.A. applicants."They assume that this buyer is ready to walk," Hobbs said. "He's not motivated."Mark Goldman, a real-estate lecturer at San Diego State University, said there are some misconceptions about V.A. loans, such as that they are more complex. He added there are a few extra disclosures, but they aren't cumbersome. But V.A. buyers can also have an advantage if the current owner also served in the military."Luckily we may meet another veteran seller that understands, 'hey, I'm willing to do that,'" Hobbs said. 1460
