CANBERRA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Alzheimer Australia on Monday released a GPS device for people with dementia, in a move to give them greater independence, while reducing the burden of missing person searches for police.The technology has been using in New South Wales of Australia, and is now available for people in state Victoria.The Safe2Walk locater can be worn by people with dementia on a lanyard around the neck or clipped onto a belt. Families can log- on to the connected website and see where the person is.The device updates the person's location every 60 seconds, reducing stress for carers so they know when a person with dementia might be wandering.It also works as a mobile phone, letting the person wearing the device to make instant calls to family.According to Alzheimer's Australia's research manager Jason Burton, the device aimed to stop vulnerable people getting lost, with research showing about 40 percent of people with dementia went missing at least once."In 99 percent of cases the carer has gone to pick them up, but there was one case where they couldn't and the police were able to contact us to get the exact GPS location of this person to rescue them," Burton told Herald Sun.A Victoria Police spokeswoman said while it could not endorse a specific product, if the device could alert carers when a person with dementia first became disorientated, the response could help avoid a large-scale police search.Mina Sapounakis, who's father has worn the Safe2Walk device, said it has given her family a sense of calm."We could go grocery shopping without stressing and rushing back home quickly to check on Dad," she said."There were a few times he had gone wandering and we were able to easily find him without having to call the police."The Safe2Walk GPS costs under 15 U.S. dollars a week for rent.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Researchers have found a way to turn mouse embryonic stem cells into sperm and this finding opens up new avenues for infertility research and treatment, according to a study published Thursday in the online edition of journal Cell,A Kyoto University team coaxed mouse embryonic stem cells into sperm precursors, called primordial germ cells (PGCs), and shown that these cells can give rise to healthy sperm. The researchers say that such in vitro reconstitution of germ cell development represents one of the most fundamental challenges in biology.When transplanted into mice that were unable to produce sperm normally, the stem cell derived PGCs produced normal-looking sperm, which were then used to successfully fertilize eggs. These fertilized eggs, when transplanted into a recipient mother, produced healthy offspring that grew into fertile male and female adult mice. The same procedure could produce fertile offspring from induced pluripotent stem cells that are often derived from adult skin cells."Continued investigations aimed at in vitro reconstitution of germ cell development, including the induction of female primordial germ cell-like cells and their descendants, will be crucial for a more comprehensive understanding of germ cell biology in general, as well as for the advancement of reproductive technology and medicine," the researchers wrote.

BERLIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The deadly strain for the E. coli outbreak was found again on cucumbers, authorities of German state Saxony-Anhalt said on Wednesday. The strain O104 was found on the scraps of cucumbers in a dustbin in the eastern city of Magdeburg, said State Health Minister Holger Paech.The dustbin belongs to a family in which three members have been ill. Paech said. The father only suffered a slight stomach upset, while the mother was once treated at a hospital and is now released. Apple's iOS is in second place with 28 percent while RIM Blackberry is down to 20 percent.Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS had a 9 percent share of the market while HP webOS (Palm) accounted for 2 percent as did Nokia' s Symbian.In Nielson's May survey, 38 percent of smartphone consumers had a device powered by Android, compared to 27 percent for Apple's iOS for iPhones and 21 percent for RIM Blackberry.Talking about the manufacturer share, Apple is the No.1 in the U.S. as it is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS, said the report.Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices accounted for 6 percent of the market.Motorola's Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers.
