CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman narrowly avoided being hit by a falling tree branch on a busy Chula Vista street Wednesday. A large branch fell from the eucalyptus tree along Telegraph Canyon Road about 3 p.m., crashing through the passenger side window of a woman’s car. Had a passenger been in the seat, the person would have been impaled, crews on the scene estimated. The woman pulled into the bike lane to assess the damage. She was able to walk independently but paramedics took her to the hospital for an assessment. No other cars were damaged, officials said. A neighbor told 10News they have seen other branches fall from the same tree. No one has been injured by the other incidents. 706

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed him several times in the face Tuesday night.Two officers got a call from a resident on Melrose Ave. who said a man threw a piece of concrete the size of a baseball at his head abouut 9 p.m.The officers determined the man was at a home on Monterey Ave. and went to the address at 10:25 p.m., police said.A woman opened the home's front door to the two officers.  The man began assaulting the first officer, police said, and they scuffled.Police tell 10News the man stabbed the officer up to half a dozen times in the head and face. The officer fired several times in self-defense, police said.At least one shot hit the man, who died on his way to the hospital.  CVPD identified him as 27-year-old David Scott.The second officer and the department chaplain, who was on a ridealong, were able to assist the injured officer. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Police Friday raided an illegal South Bay marijuana dispensary and made six arrests.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, officers served a search warrant at 9 a.m. on the black market dispensary at 259 Broadway, acting on community complaints.A half-dozen people were taken into custody on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sales, conspiracy to sale marijuana and operating a marijuana dispensary without a license, according to a police statement. (AP) — Light rain falling Wednesday in some areas of Northern California could aid crews fighting a deadly wildfire while raising the risk of flash floods and complicating efforts to recover the remains of those killed.Heavier rain was expected later in the day in the Paradise burn area, where a monstrous wildfire has killed at least 81 people and destroyed more than 13,000 homes. Farther south, residents of communities charred by a Los Angeles-area fire stacked sandbags as they prepared for possible downpours that threaten to unleash runoff from hillsides left barren by flames.Forecasters say the rain could cause mudslides and rock slides.In Paradise, teams sifted through ash and debris as they searched for bodies about 140 miles (225 kilometers) northwest of San Francisco."The task is arduous," said Rick Crawford with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills.
