KINSHASA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo arrived in Kinshasa on Friday night to begin a three-day visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).The visit by the Chinese official is set to strengthen cooperative relations between the two friendly countries, officials said.Dai is scheduled to meet with Congolese President Joseph Kabila and Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito on Saturday.During his stay in DR Congo, Dai will visit the June 30 boulevard, the People's Palace and Kinshasa's Fiftieth Independence Hospital, which were all constructed by Chinese firms.Dai, who is heading a Chinese delegation on a five-nation African tour, had previously visited Ethiopia, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea. The trip will also take him to Zambia.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a rainstorm alert Wednesday as heavy rains were expected to pound the flood-affected southern provinces.Most regions in south China, including provinces of Guizhou, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and the flood-hit Fujian, Hunan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, would experience heavy rain or rainstorms between 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday (Beijing time), the NMC said.Rainstorms were forecast for south China also during the next three days, while regions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north, and northeastern China would also experience rainfalls, it said.The observatory warned local authorities in south China, especially in the flood-battered regions, to get prepared for possible floods and geological disasters.In Fujian, heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, which engulfed two vehicles in Nanping City and left at least six people dead as of Tuesday.China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has dispatched work teams to the southern provinces of Hunan, Fujian and Guangxi and to Xinjiang after heavy rains hit the regions.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) asked authorities in the nation's major wheat-planting areas to work to achieve quick summer grain harvests in spite of the difficulties posed by the extreme weather.This year's summer harvest has proven more difficult than usual because the ripening of winter wheat has taken place one week later than normal because of the bitterly cold weather last winter, while the consistently heavy rains that recently struck south China have impeded the harvest efforts, the MOA said.The ministry said local authorities should prioritize the harvest work and complete the harvest as quickly as possible.Reaping machine should be distributed properly in different locations to raise the harvesting efficiency, it added. Also, local departments should update information such as weather, market demands, prices and transportation to ensure a smooth harvest, the ministry noted.China's four major grain production areas have shown cautious optimism toward their 2010 summer grain output. Henan, Shandong and Anhui provinces expect output of wheat to be equal or slightly higher than last year, while Hebei province forecasts slightly reduced output, according to information coming from a high level agriculture meeting held earlier in May in Zhengzhou city, the capital of Henan province.According to the MOA data, China's summer grain output accounts for one quarter of its annual food yield.
